Government should get out of way

An interesting letter to the editor about how many of the problems in this country can be solved if government got out of the way was printed in the Lafourche Gazette last week. It came from Bob Manuel of Ville Platt, a member of Gov. Bobby Jindal’s Broadband Advisory Council.

“Let our free enterprise entrepreneurs grow our economy through the expansion of broadband access,” he writes.

“Studies show that an expansion of broadband capabilities in the health care arena could save seniors $800 billion over the next 25 years and could reduce health care expenses to all Americans by 25 percent. The availability of high quality, on-line education options will make ‘lifetime learning’ an affordable reality for everyone in our state as teleconferencing and webinars take up the slack left by higher education cuts and rising education cuts across the board.

“And as our nation strives to become more energy independent and environmentally conscious, the increase in broadband applications such as telecommuting could become the cornerstone of yet another growth industry – – ‘Green Technologies’.

“This incredible growth in information resources and broadband communications has come about almost entirely without the burden of government mandates, regulatory intrusion, taxation and political maneuvering.

“I encourage elected officials at all levels to resist the urge to ‘fix that which is not broken and has the greatest potential for paving a solid foundation of economic and social innovation for the next 100 years.”
