Hahnville man accused of firing flare gun at victim

A Hahnville man faces a battery charge after allegedly firing a flare gun at a nearby victim, striking him in the chest.

Keith Chapman, 24, of 200 Sunset Court, was arrested Dec. 17 and charged with aggravated battery with a dangerous weapon after being found by St. Charles Parish deputies on Paul Fredrick Street shortly after the incident took place.

Chapman was allegedly leaving the Sunset Court area in a vehicle when, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, he fired an orange colored flare gun at the 26-year-old male victim, who was standing near the intersection of Smith Street and Sunset Court in Hahnville.

The victim, also of Hahnville, was not seriously injured, but was taken to a local hospital to be treated for a burn on his chest, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Cpl. James Grimaldi.

Grimaldi said it isn’t known what prompted the firing of the flare and that the matter is still under investigation.

Chapman is being held at Nelson Coleman Correctional Center on a bond of $40,000.
