How legislators address problems

According to investigative reporter Lee Zurik of WVUE-TV (and the Times Picayune), State Senator Yvonne Dorsey-Colomb broke the law limiting campaign contributions from Political Action Committees (“PAC”).

Instead of being punished, the state “Heh, Heh, Heh, Ethics Board” chose to ignore the law and the lawbreakers.Several politicians who broke the same law after it was made public by the media, repaid the PACs the excess contributions.

Dorsey-Colomb has come up with another solution. She filed Senate Bill 218 to increase the amount that PACs can give. There is no enforcement of the existing law so this change will allow Dorsey-Colomb to keep over $26,000 in excess contributions.

When it comes to the law, there is a double-standard in Louisiana; one for us ordinary citizens and another for those we entrust to enact the laws.

If the law isn’t going to be enforced, why not simply repeal it.
