Check ‘em out at a library near you, and, yes, our pun IS intended
By the time this column hits the paper local school kids will have already started their summer vacation.
I miss those long, lazy summer days of my youth when I didn’t have to be anywhere, when I had all the time in the world on my hands.
As a kid my favorite part of summer, aside from the no-school thing, was the local library’s summer reading program.
Back in those days the library required us to read a certain number of books on a specific subject. One year it was baseball, and I read enough books on America’s favorite pastime to score a homerun in the program.
Another year we had to read books with a maritime setting, and I became an expert on pirates and sea creatures.
It didn’t really matter to me what subject was required because then, as now, I had a voracious appetite for books and an almost insatiable curiosity on just about any subject.
Reading provided me with entertainment, knowledge, and a place where my imagination could flourish.
Reading is still just as magical for me. I love to fall into a story and walk around with the characters.
Unfortunately adult life isn’t as carefree as youth, and I don’t have as much free time for reading as I’d like, so I’ve become a great fan of audiobooks.
And my favorite book supplier is still my local library. This year the theme for St. Charles Parish Library’s summer reading program for pre-teen readers is “Book a Trip”.
When children sign up for the program, they’ll be issued a passport (reading log) to record the number of minutes they read each day.
Library staff members will serve as tour guides by hosting program, storytimes and offering craft projects relating to people, places, and animals around the world.
Book bags and T-shirts with the “Book a Trip” logo will be on sale at all the library branches.
The theme for the teen portion of the reading program is “Library Quest”.
Teens are invited to journey through the past, present, and future with books and programs that explore the wonders of the universe.
The Summer Reading Program starts June 4 and runs through July 31.
