How could anyone dislike the Amish?

How anyone can pump bullets into the bodies of young Amish girls is beyond comprehension. They are among the finest people on earth. They are different. They intentionally do not adapt to modern means of living. No electricity. No gas-guzzling cars. No loud noises coming from their homes.
They travel by horse and buggy. They wear big black top hats or bonnets. Their clothes are modest and simple.

When nighttime falls, they live by candle light. They’re up at the crack of dawn to do their chores.

Higher schooling is not so important to them because they feel their children can tend the fields with an eighth grade education. And that is all that is required. Farming is their primary vocation because it keeps them close to the land they love.

This writer has been to Berlin, Ohio several times and has visited with the large Amish community there. My family stayed in a house owned by an Amish family. It had electricity and modern cooking facilities because they rented it out to visitors who were not Amish. But they did not have such conveniences in their home.

It was not surprising to read that relatives of the young girls who were killed forgave the killer. That is the way the Amish are.

They, of course, were very saddened by the course of events that took away their loved ones but it is in their nature to accept what happens and go on living in their simple ways. And not become violent or hold grudges for any mishappening.

They stick together in their communities because they are different. And many other people do not understand or appreciate their differences.

Berlin is a busy little town because outsiders come in to visit and provide services and products that are needed. The Amish are friendly and socialize with the visitors but, when the day is done, they retire to the peace and quiet of their homes.

How could anyone dislike them enough to fire bullets into those young girls? The killer is not Amish. But, even so, there is nothing in the Amish personality that could stir up any amount of hatred by anyone.

The world is made up of many strange people. And he is one of them.
