River Region Drama Guild presents award-winning musical

BOUTTE – Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and more of your favorite storybook characters come to life on the Hahnville High School stage this week as the River Region Drama Guild presents the award-winning musical, Into the Woods – written by James Lapine and scored by Stephen Sondheim.

The musical is under the direction of Christopher Melohn and musical direction of Ben Childress – and I give it a double thumbs up.

The show opens at Hahnville School, June 8 at 7:30 p.m. Other performances include June 9, 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. and June 10 and 17 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15. For tickets or for more information, contact Marcia Peyton at 985-764-1969.

Cajun appreciation festival in St. Rose

ST. ROSE – The New Orleans Chapter of Cajun French Music Association will hold a Cajun culture celebration June 9 in St. Rose.

Music, dancing, food and family fun will highlight the event June 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 12188 River Road.

ENCORE! Historical play on stage – again

DESTREHAN – The River Road Historical Society announces an encore performance of The Voices of Louisiana play and dinner at the Destrehan Plantation Mule Barn on Saturday, July 28 with a Cajun-style buffet dinner at 6 p.m. with the performance at 7 p.m.

Vacation camp for folks on a budget

BOUTTE – The St. Charles Community Outreach Foundation will sponsor its fourth annual summer camp from June 11 through June 22 from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the John L. Dorsey Multipurpose Center.

Local students in fourth through ninth grade from low-income households are eligible to attend. The camp is limited to 40 students.

The art section will include arts and crafts, dance, music and poetry. The science section will focus on physical science lectures, experiments, engineering kits and biotech workshop.

The art class will be taught by Ogreta Colly a retired teacher. The science camp will be taught Betty Wheeler, a teacher at Lakewood Elementary. A field trip is planned to the LSU Rural Life Museum in Baton Rouge. For information, call 985-785-1351.

Sheriff’s summer camp accepting applications

HAHNVILLE – The St. Charles Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications from boys between the ages 12 to 16 who are willing to attend its ninth annual “Operation First Class Sheriff’s Camp” from July 22 to 27 and is free of charge.

The sheriff’s camp chooses 50 boys per year and the event is an outdoor experience at the Salmen Boy Scout Reservation located near Kiln, Mississippi.

Catfish Festival’s 32nd Annual Queen’s Pageant

DES ALLEMANDS – The La. Catfish Festival will host its pageant on Saturday June 9. We are seeking interested young ladies to compete for the titles of La. Catfish Queen XXXII and La. Catfish Teen Queen XXII.

Interested contestants must reside in St. Charles, St. James, St. John and Lafourche Parishes. The Miss division is ages 18-23 and is judged on interviews, sportswear, evening gown presentation and an on stage interview. Teen division is ages 14-17 and judged the same.

DESTREHAN – The Hahnville High School Class of 1977 reunion will be held on August 11 at the Ormond Country Club in Destrehan from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Cost for tickets: $60 per person Through July 31, $70 per person after July 31.

There will also be a pre-reunion gathering at Sailfish Restaurant on Highway 90 in Luling starting at 9 p.m.
