Refinery hosts benefit for Girls and Boys Town of Louisiana
DESTREHAN – Valero St. Charles Refinery will host “Hope and Healing for Children: A Gospel Brunch” on Saturday, Aug. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ormond Country Club located at 10 Villere Drive in Destrehan. This event will feature Ormond Country Club’s home-style “all you can eat” southern buffet that’s guaranteed to delight your taste buds along with traditional gospel performances that will rejuvenate your soul.
The Gospel Brunch menu items include Cheese Grits, Quiche, Scrambled Eggs, Bacon/Sausage, Sliced Meats, Biscuits, Danish, Potatoes, Vegetables, Fresh Fruit, Orange Juice, Freshly Brewed Coffee and Hot Tea. This event is a celebration of New Orleans’ gospel music and culinary traditions.
Tickets for the event are $35 per person with all proceeds benefiting Father Flanagan’s Girls and Boys Town of Louisiana a nonprofit, nonsectarian organization providing abused, abandoned and neglected children with a safe, caring, loving environment where they gain confidence to get better and learn skills to become productive citizens.

Arts council holds guest tea in Ormond
DESTREHAN – The River Region Arts and Humanities Council will host its annual member/guest tea, Fleur De The’, on Saturday, Sept. 15 at Ormond Country Club located at 10 Villere Dr.
Doors open at 11 a.m. for mix, mingle, mimosas, raffles, parade of prizes and a silent auction.

Become an advocate for disabled students
THIBODAUX – Come learn more about how you can help a disabled student at the Bayou Land Families Helping Families’ meeting that will give you the ins and outs of the rights these students are required by the state department of education on Aug. 21.
The individual education plan will be discussed from 9 a.m. to noon and the section 504 modifications and accommodations meeting will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Fats Domino comes home to New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS – Rock ‘N’ Roll icons LLoyd Price and Fats Domino will be in the New Orleans area on Friday, Aug. 17 at Tipitinas on Napoleon St. to unveil “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” sweet potato cookies which will be sold at Wal-Mart Supercenters across the state.
Proceeds from the cookie sales will fund the Lawdy Miss Clawdy Katrina Project with a total of $15 million dollars reesrved for housing and educational grants in Kenner, housing, hospitalization and help for single mothers in New Orleans, and help and scholarships for displaced Southern University students.

Cooks: Battle for the Paddle is Oct. 4
LULING – The Annual United Way of St. Charles’ Battle for the Paddle is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 4 from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the West Bank Bridge Park.
The event is a gumbo and jambalaya cook-off between teams who cook up their own special recipes on-site and serve the results to attendees of all ages who pay $5 for this all-you-can-eat extravaganza.
Sign up your team to battle ir out for the 2007 title. Registration deadline is Sept. 21. Entry fee: $50. Teams are limited to four people.

Youth pageant on tap at Paradis church
PARADIS – The St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Parish in Paradis will hold its annual Family Day Kings and Queens Pageant on Sunday, Aug. 26 at the church hall. The theme is St. John Celebrates the St. Charles Bicentennial. Attire is red, white or blue or a combination of the three.

Drama guild holds adult workshop
NORCO – The River Region Drama Guild will hold an adult theater workshop for novices and veterans 18 years and older, who want to take to the stage, enjoy theater games, improvisation and best of all laughter and have fun. This free adult theater workshop will be held for four weeks on Tuesdays and Thursday beginning Tuesday, Aug. 28 and ending on Thursday, Sept. 20.
