Register to vote, learn how to use new machines at parish post offices

Next week is Voter Education Week, and the Registrar of Voters will conduct registration drives at post offices around the parish.

The office will also demonstrate how to use the voting machines used for early voting and will mail informational postcards to all households for the upcoming fall elections. The registration drives will be held on July 15 at the Boutte Post Office, July 16 at the Destrehan Post Office and July 17 at the St. Rose Post Office.

Registration will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at each location.

Voter Education Week is held to remind voters of the major changes going into effect for the fall elections. During the week of July 14-18, Secretary of State Jay Dardenne will join election officials throughout the state in spreading the message of closed congressional primaries and the importance of accurate voter registration.

Louisianians will vote in closed primaries for the first time in decades beginning with the Sept. 6, 2008 1st Party Primary for all seven Congressional Districts and the U.S. Senate race. The 2nd Party Primary will follow on Oct. 4, the same day as voters will choose many local leaders, such as district attorneys and judges, in open primaries.

Anyone interested in registering, or changing their voter registration, can contact the Registrar of Voters at 985-783-5120 or visit www.stcharlesgov.net/departments/rov.html. Additionally, they can call the Secretary of State’s election hotline at 1-800-883-2805 or visit www.geauxvote.com.
