Learn the history of Creole homes at Destrehan library

DESTREHAN – John H. Lawrence, Director of Museum Programs for the Historic New Orleans Collection, will give a visual presentation based on the book Creole Houses: Traditional Homes of Old Louisiana at the St. Charles Parish East Regional Library on February 23 at 2:00 p.m. The library is located at 100 River Oaks Dr. in Destrehan.

Creole Houses was selected as one of the top nonfiction works of 2007 by Times-Picayune book editor Susan Larson. In the book, Lawrence provides written commentary for the photographs taken by Steve Gross and Sue Daley.

Creole houses are found throughout Louisiana and are a blend of French and Spanish colonial styles with West Indian, African, and Native American influences.

Appreciation of Creole culture will be heightened as Lawrence presents in-depth information about the architectural design and interior decoration of the houses as well as the society that produced them.

The program will last approximately 45 minutes and includes a brief overview of the book’s contents along with more detailed looks at a few of the buildings featured in the book.

A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation. Books will not be available for purchase at the event, but Lawrence will be available to sign any books that were purchased in advance.
