In only his second game as a starter, Destrehan sophomore quarterback Marquise Darensbourg threw two touchdowns and ran for another in the first half of the Wildcats’ 48-7 win over Helen Cox on Friday.

The rest of the Destrehan squad was just as impressive as they cruised to their second blowout win in as many games.

The Wildcats (2-0) struck first in the opening quarter after Darensbourg led his team down the field with passes to John Williams and Alfred Smith. The drive ended with a 4-yard run by Will Matthews that put Destrehan on top 7-0.

Cox (0-2) fumbled on their next series and the Wildcats took over on the Cougar’s 39-yard line. Darensbourg found Williams for a 28-yard score a minute later for a 14-0 lead with 4:07 left in the first quarter.

With Destrehan’s defense keeping Cox quarterback Dion Ray rushed and off target, the Wildcat offense took control on the opening play of the second quarter. This time, Darensbourg found Kirk Merritt in the end zone for a 38-yard score.

A series later, Darensbourg kept his team’s drive alive with a 23-yard scamper before diving in from a yard out to give the Wildcats a 28-0 lead halfway through the second quarter.

But the Wildcats weren’t done yet, striking again before the half.

Matthews began the drive with a 20-yard run before picking up 10 yards on a screen pass.

The Wildcats stalled for two plays and faced 3rd and 10, but Darensbourg came through once again, this time with an 18-yard run. He followed with a 17-yard pass to Williams that brought the Wildcats to the Cougar’s 15.

A play later, Matthews scored his second touchdown of the night on a 10-yard run through the Cox defense.

The Wildcats wasted little time getting back on the scoreboard to start the third when Merritt took the kickoff back 85 yards for a 42-0 Destrehan lead.

The Wildcats pulled their starters halfway through the third, but the Destrehan offense still found success with senior running back Jarell Clay rushing for a 22-yard score.

Cox avoided a shutout when Ray connected with Jason Charles for a 24-yard score, but it was too little, too late.

Destrehan will host Dutchtown at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19.
