Wildcats sweep through Gerard Oubre Memorial

The Destrehan Wildcats swept the competition at the Gerard Oubre Memorial Tournament, beating Holy Cross, Jesuit, Brother Martin and Central Lafourche to improve to 16-3 on the season.

In their first tourney game against Holy Cross, the Wildcats took a 4-1 lead after two innings due in large part to a two-run home run by Sam Steib in the bottom of the first.

Holy Cross came back with a four-run third inning to take a 5-4 lead, but the Wildcats bounced back in the bottom of the frame.

Kade Granier doubled to right to start off the inning and scored on another double by Tanner Hayes. Destrehan then took a 6-5 lead on a sacrifice fly by Blake Hymel.

The Wildcats put the game away in the sixth by scoring six runs.

Ryan Brewer picked up the win for Destrehan, giving up five hits and four runs while striking out five in six innings.

Steib and Hymel each recorded three RBIs in the win, while Hayes finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Jace Weber, Brewer and Granier also drove in runs in the game.

 

Destrehan 4 Jesuit 3

 

After trailing 3-0 heading into the fourth inning, the Wildcats struck back with three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to claim their second win of the tournament.

The Wildcats loaded the bases to start the fourth inning after Brewer, Brock Benedetto and Granier each drew walks. Another base on balls was issued to Hayes, which brought Brewer home.

Hymel then blasted a double to left that brought in both Benedetto and Granier to tie the game at 3-3.

The Wildcats took the lead for good in the next inning. Brennan Breaud started the frame with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Weber. Breaud came home on a ground out to third by Brewer to give Destrehan a 4-3 lead that held up for the rest of the game.

Hymel picked up the win for Destrehan and gave up seven hits in six innings. Granier earned the save after coming on in the seventh and striking out one while allowing no hits.

Hymel finished with two RBIs, while Hayes and Brewer also brought home runs.

Brother Martin 4

 

The Wildcats scored in the first five innings of their game with Brother Martin to claim a 7-4 victory. It was Destrehan’s second win over Brother Martin this season.

The Wildcats took a 4-1 lead after the first two innings, but Brother Martin crept back within one run in the third.

But in the bottom of the frame, Benedetto gave his team a little breathing room by blasting a home run to left field to put Destrehan up 5-3.

Brewer drove in Breaud in the fourth to increase the Destrehan lead to 6-3 and the Wildcats took a 7-4 lead after Granier scored on an error in the fifth.

Granier picked up the win for the Wildcats, striking out three and giving up three hits in three innings of work. Austin McDonald closed out the Wildcat victory, striking out two and giving up only one hit in three innings.

Weber, Brewer, Benedetto and Hayes all finished with an RBI in the game, while Steib went 3-for-3 from the plate.

Central Lafourche 2

 

Destrehan completed their tourney sweep with a 6-2 win over Central Lafourche on Sunday.

The Wildcats got most of their offensive production in the second inning when they took a 4-1 lead. Hymel put Destrehan on the board with a double to left and came home on a single by Jacob Cambre to give the Wildcats a 2-1 advantage.

A batter later, Breaud brought in another run with a single to center and Brewer stretched the lead to 4-1 on a double.

Jesse Bryant picked up the win for Destrehan, striking out six while giving up six hits in five innings of work.

Weber, Brewer, Hymel, Cambre and Breaud each finished with an RBI.
