Wildcats suffer back-to-back losses

Destrehan coach Todd Bourg says District 7-5A in boys basketball is much like the SEC in football.

“You have to come ready to play every night,” Bourg said. “There are no let-downs.”

Just days after his team stunned East St. John with a 4-point, 60-56 at home, Destrehan went on the road to Terrebonne and lost by four, 57-53. Then on Tuesday the Wildcats let a heartbreaker slip through their hands.Destrehan let Hahnville chip away time and again at lead after lead only to see the Tigers take a 63-61 victory in overtime. The Wildcats led by seven with less than a minute to play in overtime, but let Hahnville rally with a flurry of turnovers and missed shots.

Bourg’s team was still reeling from Friday night’s tough loss at Terrebonne.

“On the road, you know,” Bourg said, before pointing out that Terrebonne is no rollover opponent. The Tigers had given Destrehan a battle in the season opener, which the Wildcats won 60-53.

“Terrebonne’s a good team, we knew what they could do,” Bourg said. “I knew going into it that it was going to be a battle. We just didn’t shoot the ball particularly well that night. We missed a lot of shots point blank at the goal and we gave them a lot of second-chance baskets. Our defensive philosophy is always to control the paint. We didn’t do that (on Friday).”

The Wildcats had the same troubles on Tuesday, missing too many opportunities to score.

Destrehan’s playoff hopes now could be in jeopardy. The Wildcats will host Thibodaux on Friday, and Bourg said he hopes to take advantage of the home field advantage. Destrehan edged the Tigers 48-47 in their last meeting on Jan. 13 in Thibodaux.

“I tell the kids all the time, ‘You’ve got to win all your home games,’” Bourg said. “Then you hope to steal a few on the road. We stole one from H.L. Bourgeois by one point and then we stole one from Thibodaux by one point.”
