Destrehan fought to force extra innings late in Saturday’s Class 5A second round postseason game against visiting Jesuit, but the Blue Jays scored two runs in the 8th inning to capture a 5-3 victory, bringing the Wildcats season to an end. The round was contested in a 2-out-of-3 series. Jesuit won the series 2-0, after also winning the series opener 1-0 in Metairie Friday.
“Obviously, it’s disappointing that we couldn’t score more runs,” Destrehan coach Chris Mire said. “It’s been the same frustration for us over the last few weeks of the season. Our offense wasn’t really clicking like it did earlier in the year. The guys tried to battle through it, but in the end it cost us.”
Destrehan (24-8) trailed 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh Saturday but tied the game with a pair of seventh inning runs to force extra innings.
A Jesuit (25-7) double plated two runs in the top of the eighth inning to retake the lead. Destrehan didn’t go quietly; Jared Montz, Brennan Cortez and Kohen Granier each drew walks to load the bases with one out. But Mason Mayfield struck out Cole Martin then got Brandon Robichaux to ground out to end the game.
Destrehan tied the game after Martin and Robichaux singled to lead off the seventh. PJ Carmichael laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Andrew Morrow grounded out to drive in one run, then Dane Simon reached on an error and Robichaux scored to tie the game.
“Our guys don’t quit,” Mire said. “We put them through a lot early in the season, schedule-wise, to get them ready for anything. They’re a mentally tough group.”
Martin went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Destrehan offensively.
Landon Marceaux pitched four innings and allowed one run on three hits. He struck out six and walked four. Nolan Lemoine, Cortez and Bryce Scioneaux combined to pitch four innings in relief, allowing three runs and three hits.
In the first game, Brandon Briuglio was the star for Jesuit, pitching a complete game shutout to pace the Blue Jays in a 1-0 victory.
Cole Martin allowed one run on three hits for Destrehan. He struck out six and walked five.
Jesuit scored its lone run in the third inning.
Destrehan fought through injuries to its batting order to reach round two, notably the loss of starter Gage Broussard to a hand injury and also an accumulation of leg injuries that slowed down cleanup hitter Brandon Wild.
DHS loses seniors Morrow, Robichaux, Martin, Miles Patereau, Jared Montz and Wild from its starting lineup.
“We’re losing some talent and a group of good leaders,” Mire said. “Guys who waited their turn and worked extremely hard to help our team have success.”
But DHS figures to bring back a talented group next season. While Martin and Wild will be big losses in the rotation, Marceaux, Scioneaux, Cortez and Lemoine are primed to lead another strong staff in 2017.
