Wildcats hold on for 4-3 win over Tigers

The Destrehan Wildcats beat the Hahnville Tigers 4-3 in the opening district game for both teams.

With home-field advantage and a good crowd, the Tigers took an early lead when Destrehan was called for a hand ball in the box. A penalty kick was awarded to Hahnville and Michael Aucoin made the shot with 19:40 left to play in the first half.

The Tigers held that lead for only four minutes when Brayen Zuniga broke free on the left wing and pushed the ball pass Hahnville goalie Jatin Patel to tie the score at 1-1 with 15:40 left to play in the first half.

The Wildcats were not finished.  With only a minute left in the half, Austin Martin  slipped past the Hahnville defenders and scored to make it 2-1.

Hahnville coach Garret Baham said play in the first half was considered “very rough.”

“The officials allowed the rough play to go on and we played hard,” he added.

In the second half, Zuniga once again pushed the ball up the field on a break away and scored his second goal of the night.

Destrehan went to a five-man defensive front hoping to keep Hahnville from scoring.  But when Hahnville and Destrehan play against each other, you can throw the records out.

The Tigers rallied around each other and started to find open players with their passes. Brion James broke away in the middle of the field from an assist from Aucoin and scored, making the score 3-2 with 26:00 minutes left to play.

Hahnville kept up the pressure defense against the Wildcats and regained control of the game.

Jonathan Schmoltz broke free from a weak side pass and went one-on-one with the goalie.

“The goalie came out to cut the angles and I managed to get the ball past him for the score,” Schmoltz said after the game.

The game was now tied 3-3, with 3:15 left to play.

It looked like the Tigers and Wildcats were headed into overtime, but  Scotty Anderson stepped up his game for Destrehan.

He broke free from some good passing and found the back of the goal with just seconds left in the game to give the Wildcats the win.

“We played hard against an experienced Destrehan Team.” Baham said.
