Wildcats fall to Helen Cox in first round of Class 5A state playoffs

Destrehan’s basketball season came to an end with a 67-49 loss to No. 2 Helen Cox in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.

Initially, the Wildcats held their own, finishing the first quarter just three points behind Cox, 14-11. At the break, Helen Cox increased the lead to 29-23. Cox pulled away in the third quarter and clinched the win by outscoring the Wildcats 21-15 in the final quarter.

The Wildcats leading scorer,  David Green, scored 16 points and pulled six off the glass. Seniors Clifton Adams and Dewayne Walker helped out with eight points and five points, respectively. Lucky Maxon also had eight points and eight rebounds while Cedric Jones scored seven points

“I felt pretty good going into the game,”  Destrehan head coach Tom Bourg said. “I didn’t know if we could beat them, but I felt if we shot well and didn’t turn the ball over we had a chance. Unfortunately, we didn’t shoot well and turned the ball over too much, and that cost us.”Bourg said he knew it was going to be a tough game for several reasons.

“They have a pretty tough bench,” Bourg said. “ They can go 10 or 11 deep. I also think their size got to us, they had players 6’5, 6’6 and 6’4 out there. Plus, they scored a lot of buckets on turnovers.” Helen Cox combined for three blocks, seven steals and 21 rebounds on the night.

Bourg said he was glad to have made the playoffs this year, if only to give this young squad some experience. He looks to the future with 6-foot-6 freshman Pressman Guidry and 6-foot-4 junior Michael Ceaser returning.

“In the next two or three years we should be pretty good,” Bourg said.
