Wildcats cruise to first district win

Increase record to 21-3 after wins over Higgins, Live Oak and Parkview

The Destrehan Wildcats crushed Higgins 21-2 behind 16 hits on Tuesday to pick up their first district win of the season. With the victory, the Wildcats snapped a five-game Higgin’s win streak while stretching their own win streak to nine games.

Destrehan (21-3) fell behind 1-0 in the first inning but made Higgins pay for that early lead by scoring six runs in the bottom of the frame.

Brock Benedetto put the Wildcats on the board with a two-RBI double and Kade Granier followed with a double of his own to increase the Destrehan lead to 3-0. Blake Hymel capped the six-run frame by knocking a hard ground ball to short that gave Jacob Cambre enough time to come home.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Wildcats extended their lead to 10-0 on doubles by Sam Steib and Hymel. In the third, they added four more runs on singles by Granier and Tanner Hayes.

The Destrehan offense exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to build up a 21-2 lead. Sophomores Erik Vinnett, Randy Harvey and Logan Babin hit consecutive RBI singles in the frame and Cambre doubled to right to add the 21st run.

Hymel led the Wildcats from the plate, finishing with four RBIs on one hit. Granier went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Benedetto and Harvey each had two RBIs.

Vinnett, Steib, Hayes, Cambre, Hunter Abadie and Babin also drove in runs in the game.

Ryan Brewer picked up the win for the Wildcats, striking out two and giving up three hits in three innings.

Austin McDonald pitched the final two innings for the Wildcats and struck out one while allowing three hits.

 

Destrehan beats Live Oak, Parkview

Destrehan also picked up a pair of impressive wins over Live Oak and Parkview last week.

The Wildcats used a six-run second inning to pull out an 8-6 victory over Live Oak on Thursday.

Destrehan trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the second frame but Hymel tied the game after coming home on an error. Brewer drew a bases loaded walk to give the Wildcats a 4-3 lead and Hayes came through with a three-RBI double to put Destrehan on top 8-3.

Live Oak cut into the Destrehan lead with three runs in the sixth, but Jesse Bryant got Gage Luckwood to fly out to end the inning.

Hayes led the Wildcats from the plate, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Brewer, Steib and Brennan Breaud also drove in runs in the win.

Brewer picked up the win for Destrehan, striking out four and allowing no hits in five innings. Granier earned the save after striking out two in one inning.

Destrehan picked up another win on Saturday, blanking Parkview Baptist 6-0.

The Wildcats took the lead in the third inning after Granier blasted a double to right to put Destrehan up 2-0. Hymel followed with a two-RBI single to increase the Destrehan lead to 4-0 and Brewer doubled in another run in the fourth.

The Wildcats added one more run in the sixth to clinch the victory.

Hymel and Granier both finished with two RBIs on solo hits while Brewer went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Hymel also picked up the win for the Wildcats, striking out three in a complete game shutout.

Destrehan will travel to East St. John on Saturday with the game scheduled to start at 2 p.m. They will hit the road again on Tuesday when they face Bonnabel at 6 p.m.
