Destrehan coach Stephen Robicheaux said his Wildcats’ performance against Barbe Friday night might have been his team’s very best of the season. High praise when speaking of an undefeated team, to be sure; few witnesses, however, would likely argue.

The No. 3 seeded Wildcats thoroughly dominated from start to finish as they rumbled past Barbe and into the Class 5A quarterfinals, winning 52-27 in a second round playoff game.

“We can only control what we do, and obviously tonight we played a tremendous game,” Robicheaux said. “I thought everybody, our offensive, defense and special teams, every guy was just on point.

“When you come out here and score 50 and (your first team) allow(s) just 7 against a great Barbe team that’s been scoring points all year, that says a lot. Our kids played their hearts out tonight.”

Destrehan (11-0) will host No. 6 Parkway next week with a trip to the state semifinals on the line. Parkway defeated Acadiana 55-28 to advance to the quarterfinal round.

Barbe (7-4) scored 20 of its 27 points in the fourth quarter, after Destrehan took a 52-7 lead after a Kristian Mosley touchdown run. DHS led 28-0 after the opening quarter and 28-7 at halftime.

Mosley finished the game with a team-high 145 yards rushing.

Barbe turned the ball over on the opening kickoff and it set up an immediate Kohen Granier to John Williams touchdown connection that largely foretold what was to come. Granier accounted for five total touchdowns, rushing for two and tossing all three of his scoring passes to Williams. Granier finished with 207 passing yards, while Williams caught six passes for 133 yards.

Parkway’s win negates what could have been a rematch of last year’s Class 5A championship game between Destrehan and Acadiana. The Wrecking Rams eliminated Destrehan in each of the past two seasons.

Is Robicheaux glad to avoid his team’s recent nemesis?

“It might not be a good thing,” he said with a laugh. “I don’t know. You’ve got to watch what you ask for … I’m sure Parkway has a great team and they’re going to be ready for us.”

But that game will be at Destrehan, where the Wildcats haven’t lost a game since 2012.
