Hahnville High hosts Don Raymond Relays
Hahnville High’s annual Don Raymond Relays was held on Friday, March 16 at Tiger Stadium. Many schools came to try their best to compete in the events, but none other than our own Hahnville Tigers took home the gold, for the girl’s team that is.
The boys track team came in 3rd, and gave their absolute best considering the competition.
However, the track meet itself was as important in as the person for whom it is dedicated to, Don Alan Raymond.
Raymond was as inspirational a person as he was an outstanding athlete. One of the best to walk through the doors of Hahnville High School.
Growing up during segregation’s worst, he found a way pull through the hatred and leave a mark for all to follow.
He was one of the first male African-Americans who intergraded into public schools.
Raymond did not stop there. He also joined the segregated sports teams and succeeded triumphantly.
He played basketball, baseball, football and ran track – all of which he acquired All-District awards for and set record times not only in Hahnville books, but in other schools around the state as well.
Needless to say, Hahnville’s track team had big shoes to fill, but they took it stride as many competitors placed high in their events.
Marcus Campell placed 1st in triple jump, Damon Scoot placed 3rd in the high and long jump, and Precious Singleton and Constance Mitchell both placed 1st in the 200-meter dash.
All athletes were vital to the win by scoring 150 points for the girl’s team.
Coach Ostrieker reports that in the 4×2 relay, the girls finished at an amazing time of 1:45, a personal best for the Lady Tigers.
There is more action to come for the Lady Tiger track team in the Sugarbowl Track Relay taking place later this month.
