Tigers, Wildcats go through one final tune-up

The Tigers and the Wildcats will take to the field on Aug. 28 when both teams take part in a four-squad jamboree at the Hahnville High School stadium. Hahnville will kick off the event against St. James at 6:30 p.m., with Destrehan taking on Lutcher 15 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

Both games will consist of two 15-minute halves.

Hahnville head coach Lou Valdin says that the jamboree will give his squad time to work on special teams.

“From my standpoint, it’s a dress rehearsal for special teams,” he said. “That’s the biggest thing and I want special teams on the field as much as possible.”

Valdin says it also gives his team a chance to work on their sideline organization and serves as one more opportunity to see the squad on film before the start of the season.

Destrehan head coach Stephen Robicheaux agrees.

“It’s a great dress rehearsal for the team,” Robicheaux said. “It allows the coaches to see whose ready to play and also helps the coaches get ready for the season. You work on certain things all week in practice, but this gives you a chance to work on them against somebody besides yourselves.”

Both Destrehan and Hahnville have gone through earlier scrimmages as they prepare for the upcoming season. Valdin, whose team took on Higgins last week, has been pleased with his squad’s progress.

“I don’t think Higgins stopped us offensively – we stopped ourselves,” Valdin said. “We didn’t put the ball on the ground though, and I was really happy with that. Defensively, we were physical and ran to the ball.

“We had some mental mistakes against Higgins, but we were physical and the players put forth good effort. Right now, mistakes are on me – I can fix those.”

Robicheaux was also pleased with his Wildcats when they scrimmaged against Salmen High School.

“The offensive line played well and our backs really looked good,” Robicheaux said. “I was pleased with how the offense played.”

Robicheaux also singled out the performance of quarterback Wynrick Smothers and the play of his defense.
