Tigers take Spillway Classic cross country title

Last Wednesday, nine area teams came together in the Bonnet Carre’ Spillway for the DHS-HHS Spillway Classic. Teams from Houma Christian, Vandebilt, East St. John, Thibodaux, H.L. Bourgeois, Central Lafourche and Ellender joined Destrehan and Hahnville for the competition.

The 2.7-mile race looked to be a preview of the district championships, as the only teams missing from the district were South Lafourche and Terrebonne.

The 1-2 punch of Bryce and Beau Robinson led the Tigers to the title. Bryce finished the course in 13:49 and Beau ran it in 14:23. The next closest competitor, Brandon McDonald of H.L. Bourgeois, finished almost a full minute behind Beau at 15:21.

Nicholas Lirette (16:25 – 6th) and Shawn Maher (16:56-7th) were the two other Tigers to finish in the top 10. As a team, the Tigers finished with 30 points, 46 points ahead of second-place Vandebilt and 48 points ahead of third-place East St. John.

The Destrehan Wildcats finished seventh.

For the Lady Tigers, the results weren’t as good. The race was dominated by the ladies from Vandebilt Catholic, Alexa Breaux in particular. The sophomore from Houma is the defending cross country state championship runner-up in 4-A, and is the defending 2-mile indoor track champion for 4-A.

She finished the course in 17:48, more than a minute ahead of her teammate, Eleana Callejas.

The Terriers finished with an amazing 20 points, having placed six runners in the top 10 (1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th and 9th). Neither the Lady Tigers nor the Lady Wildcats had a runner finish in the top 10. As a team, the Lady Wildcats finished in fifth place, 114 points behind Vandebilt.

The Lady Tigers finished in seventh place.

The Tigers will face some of these same runners, along with a few more from the Lafourche/Terrebonne region, when they compete at the Tiger-Cardinal Invitational at Peltier Park in Thibodaux next week.
