Just when it seemed like Hahnville had gotten back on track by snapping a three-game skid with a big win over East St. John, the Tigers regressed with an 8-4 loss to East Ascension.
It was East Ascension’s first district win of the season.
“I’m very dissapointed,” Hahnville head coach Kade Rogers said. “Everything that could have gone wrong did.”
East Ascension went up 3-0 in the third, but the Tigers fought back to take a 4-3 in the top of the fourth. However, East Ascension picked up two runs in the bottom of the inning, then three more in the sixth for the win.
Rogers attributed the loss to costly mental errors.
“The board only showed four errors, but we had nine in our book,” he said. “It was things like catching the ball in the outfield and throwing it to the wrong person and bobbling balls.
“It was just a lack of communication.”
Rogers said it was especially frustrating when East Ascension successfully bunted three times in a row.
“We had a chance to put away a previously 0-5 team and pick up a game on somebody else and we didn’t do that,” Rogers said.
Britten Lanaux (5-3) picked up the loss for Hahnville.
The loss was even more shocking considering how well the Tigers played last Thursday against East St. John.
Hahnville rode the right arm of Matt Allo and the bat of Ryne Robert to a 12-1 thrashing of East St. John, ending a three-game district losing streak in the process.
Allo (3-0) didn’t have a strikeout in the game, but allowed only two hits in four innings. Robert went wild in the fourth inning, blasting two doubles and driving in three runs as the Tigers turned a 3-0 lead to a 12-0 blowout in one inning. But while those players stepped up, Rogers said it was a complete team effort.
“It was a great performance and I couldn’t have asked more from them,” he said.
Before beating East St. John, Hahnville had suffered three tough losses. The Tigers were in each game until the late innings, but couldn’t put it together when it counted. Those losses were hard to take, but they came to Destrehan, St. Amant and Dutchtown, who are first, second and third, respectively, in District 6-5A.
But this time the Tigers took an early lead and then exploded for nine runs in the fourth inning to put the game away.
The Tigers took advantage of East St. John errors to pull out to a 3-0 lead. Jared Vial scored the first run after knocking a single and advancing on back-to-back errors.
Austin Fremin gave Hahnville a 2-0 lead after reaching and scoring on an error.
Mike Ford put the Tigers up 3-0 after hitting a single and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Cody Farrell.
The Tigers then blew the game open in the fourth inning, batting around and scoring nine runs on six hits. The Tigers had 12 total hits in the game.
“Ryne had a couple of big hits for us but everybody contributed from the plate,” Rogers said. “When one guy is struggling another guy picks it up.”
