Tigers off to perfect district start after brutal non-district schedule

After going 8-8 against a tough non-district schedule to open the season, the Hahnville Tigers are 3-0 in league play after victories over Thibodaux, Destrehan and Terrebonne.

The Tigers used a strong first quarter, outscoring Thibodaux 20-10, to pace themselves to the 65-52 win. Nate Kennedy led Hahnville with 15 points, while Fountainette Bradley added 10 points.

Hahnville head coach Marcell Fisher said his team was able to dictate the tempo in the victory.

“We gave our guys early looks. When Nate Kennedy gets going, it really opens it up for our slashers to score inside,” he said.

On Friday, Hahnville picked up their second-straight district win with a 60-43 victory over rival Destrehan. Once again, the Tigers started strong by outscoring the Wildcats 15-4 in the second quarter.

Bradley led the Tigers with 15 points and eight rebounds. Kennedy had 12 points, while Christian McKinney finished with 12 points.

“I thought it was a great performance overall,” Fisher said. “We got a little sloppy down the stretch, but I was definitely proud of the guys.”

Fisher said he thought his squad was able to confuse Destrehan by using several different defensive sets.“We changed defenses a lot from man-to-man, half court, trap, full court and half court…we threw a lot of things at them,” he said.

Hahnville picked up their third district win on Tuesday when they beat Terrebonne 72-70. Mason Aucoin led the Tigers with 21 points, while Bradley finished with 18 points.

Though they lost half of their first 16 games, Fisher believes that the brutal non-district schedule his team played to open the season will pay dividends as the Tigers move into the heart of their district schedule.

Three of Hahnville’s eights losses this season have come to John Curtis. The Tigers also lost to Warren Easton, Brother Martin, Jesuit and Helen Cox.

“Everyone we played was in the top 10 or top 20 of their class,” Fisher said. “It was tough to look at it at the time, but now that we are through it we have played everyone that was someone. We also had chances [to win] against Helen Cox, Warren Easton and Jesuit.

“It was a learning process and I’m still trying to teach our guys how to play the game. I think  those early games will help us down the road.”
