After suffering one of the worst defeats in school history last week against parish rival Destrehan, the Hahnville Tigers are picking up the pieces going into this week’s game against Terrebonne.
Hahnville (2-3, 1-1) was shut down on both offense and defense last week in their 49-0 loss versus Destrehan.
Despite suffering such a lopsided defeat, Hahnville head coach Lou Valdin said he thinks his players will rebound quickly.
“Most of the time when you get beat like that it is easier than having heartbreaking losses,” he said. “There was no question we got stomped by a better team.”
One advantage the Tigers have is that Terrebonne (3-1, 1-2) played on Monday in a 42-16 loss to South Lafourche and will only have time for three practices before facing off against Hahnville on Friday.
Terrebonne’s other loss on the season came against Destrehan in the district opener two weeks ago by a score of 42-17. Valdin said the past two games have been a departure for Terrebonne’s offense.
“They usually put up a lot of points,” he said.
Valdin said he thinks Terrebonne is evenly matched with Thibodaux, who Hahnville came from behind to win against two weeks ago.
“They have a good offensive line. Their quarterback is fast and athletic, they have a great tailback. They are a good football team like Thibodaux, a very similar team,” he said.
Valdin said he expects Terrebonne to run a lot of the option, but he said they have also had success in the passing game this year and that they spread the ball around to a number of players.
On the defensive side of the ball, Valdin said Terrebonne has two great linebackers that they will have to avoid.
“We are hoping to be able to run and pass,” he said. “We were hoping to be able to do that last week too and that didn’t work out too well.”
For Hahnville to come out on top, much as they did in their last win of the season against Thibodaux, Valdin said special teams will have to play a big factor.
“Their special teams are OK, but I think ours are going to have to be better than theirs,” he said. “That is going to have to be our winning edge.”
In any event, Valdin said his team will not devolve into entirely changing their game plan just because they were blown out last week, but will take a more even handed approach to the remainder of the season.
“We aren’t panicking. We knew Destrehan was much better than us. We do what we do,” he said. “If we could make changes to improve I’m sure we would have made them already. What we’ve got on the field is the best we’ve got.”
Kickoff for the Hahnville vs. Terrebonne game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Terrebonne.
