Seniors come up big in Hahnville’s playoff win

Senior Mike Ford
Senior Mike Ford came up big for the Tigers in their bi-district win against Covington, hitting three doubles and bringing in four runs to lead Hahnville to a 10-7 win. Two of Ford’s doubles came in the second inning, where the Tigers scored seven runs.

Hahnville seniors Mike Ford, Travis Faucheux and Cody Farrell did all they could to extend their high school baseball careers, leading the Tigers past Covington 10-7 in the bi-district round of the playoffs on Tuesday.

Ford knocked three doubles in the game, finishing with four RBIs, while Faucheux had three RBIs on two hits. Farrell came on in relief in the final 1.2 innings and earned the win after giving up only two hits and striking out one.

“I’m really happy for those guys. They have been here for four years working hard and are now reaping the benefits,” Hahnville head coach Kade Rogers said.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning due to an error and home run, the Tigers came out fighting in the bottom of the second and scored seven runs. Ford led off the inning with a double to left and advanced to third on a single by Connor Lorio.

Ford would score on a fielder’s choice by Tyler Lamers.

With the Tigers still trailing by two runs, Travis Faucheux stepped to the plate and blasted a shot to deep right that sailed over the Covington right fielder’s head. Easton Melancon, Dylan Keller and Ty Cologne all scored to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead.

But Hahnville wasn’t done yet.

Tyler Simmons doubled to left to bring in Faucheux, and Ford came through with his second double of the inning to plate Simmons and Farrell to put the Tigers on top 7-3.

For the next two innings, neither team managed to get on the scoreboard, but Covington added two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

But with the game on the line, the Tigers responded once again.

Cologne singled to third to get Hahnville started, with Simmons drawing a walk to give the Tigers two base runners. Farrell reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases.

That set the stage for another big play from Ford, who doubled to right to give the Tigers a 9-7 lead. The final run of the game scored on a sacrifice fly by Lorio.

“This team responded well and they kind of have a bend but don’t break attitude,” Rogers said. “They have a lot of heart. One of our sayings is that you can either throw in the towel or use it to wipe the sweat off your face.

“These guys have been working hard.”

Ford led Hahnville from the plate, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Faucheux was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Simmons, Lorio and Lamers each brought in a run.

The Tigers used five pitchers in the game, but Farrell got the win in 1.2 innings.

Hahnville, who has now won 17 straight games, will travel to Zachary, who is ranked second in the state. Zachary finished the regular season with a 27-7 record that included a 10-0 mark in district play. They beat Mandeville 6-0 in the bi-district round.
