Rockin’ & Bowlin’

Strikes, turkeys and even the occasional gutter ball make bowling ‘fun’ for St. Charles Parish seniors

Don’t let the name of St. Charles Parish’s senior bowling league fool you. While there’s fun to be had at the lanes, these bowlers meet to compete and they mean business. The Fun Bowling League for Seniors is comprised of 16 4-man teams. They compete in two rounds of tournament play each year, followed by a championship match in December.

“We take our games very seriously,” said Lupe Sweeny. “Although we are not a sanctioned league, we compete as though we were.”

Sweeny, who joined the league eight years ago, says that bowling is something she’s always enjoyed doing.

“I love bowling,” she said. “I first started playing in 1972 and haven’t put the ball down yet.”

With a mediocre average of 158, Sweeny says that her game is off and her ball may as well be in the gutter.

“My team won the first round this year and we need to get back on track in order to make it to the championship round,” she said. “I normally carry a 167 average, but right now I’m in a slump.”

Seniors from all walks of life and of all ages have made a name for themselves in the league.

“Our oldest player is Clarence Comardelle,” said Sweeny. “He’s 84 years old and has been bowling since before I joined the league.”

The Fun Bowling League for Seniors meets each Monday at 10 a.m. at the AMF Bowling Lanes in Kenner at 3640 Williams Blvd., and is currently seeking new players.

“We have several vacancies we need to fill on a few of the teams,” added Sweeny. “Anyone who likes to bowl and takes the game seriously should stop by the lanes to see what we are all about.”

The league is open to those 50 and older.
