Robicheaux says spring game will be good measuring stick for Destrehan

The Destrehan Wildcats are looking to answer some questions about their upcoming season this spring and find out how the team will adjust to losing nine key players that helped lead the squad to an appearance in the state championship game last year.

The triple threat of running back Will Matthews, wide receiver Alfred Smith and wide receiver/running back Kirk Merritt is something the Wildcats have had the luxury of for the past four years, but they’re gone. As are all five of last year’s starting offensive linemen.

Destrehan head coach Stephen Robicheaux enters into his 13th season with the Wildcats and a 130-31 record. Last season DHS finished undefeated in District 7-5A with their only loss coming in the Class 5A state title game.

Robicheaux is using spring practice to fill those positions up front, and has high expectations for next season’s squad.

“We are really excited and have a lot of expectations,” Robicheaux said. “There are some questions that still need to be answered, but so far the kids are doing a great job.”

One of those questions might be how junior Kohen Granier will handle the full-time responsibility of quarterback with the transfer of Marquise Darensbourg to East St. John.

In the backfield, Karon Taylor could be a viable threat, and the return of wide receivers John Williams and Tramaine Armstrong will give Granier talented targets downfield.

On defense, returning is Glen Logan who has been recognized as one of the state’s top defensive tackles.

Also returning is Gerald Wilbon and linebackers Alex Zayed and Tyjon Sanchez, along with cornerback Kendall Anderson.

Those players are hoping to continue Destrehan’s legacy as one of the top defensive programs in the state.

The Wildcats will take on Covington on May 14 at 6 p.m. at Jack Salter Stadium in Covington.

“Covington is a good program,” Robicheaux said. “It should be a good measuring stick of where we’re at.”
