As a coach and a player, Hahnville High graduate Pokey Chatman has recorded quite a few accolades in her day and is looking to help out up and coming basketball players with her Maximum Effort Camp kicking off on August 3. The camp is the first in a series of “Coach Pokey Basketball Camps” and will take place at Hahnville High School in Boutte on August 3 and 4.
Chatman said the camps play a pivotal role in helping fine tune the talents of young athletes and help them gain an even greater appreciation for the game.
“It’s well documented that the best way to improve the team is to improve the individual,” Chatman said. “This camp is a step in that direction.”
Chatman has also gathered some impressive talent to help her run the camp including Camp Director and former LSU and La Tech Assistant Coach Christie Sides. Other coaches scheduled to participate in the camp include All-SEC and NCAA three-point shooting record holder Cornelia Gayden, All-American LaTasha Dorsey, Simsboro High School state champion coach Kelley Stuckey, and All-SEC player Barbara Henderson.
Chatman wants campers to come and have fun, but she’s also looking for them to be ready for quite a workout.
“Campers should come prepared for extensive fundamental drills for enhanced offensive and defensive performance in both perimeter and post positions,” Chatman said. “There will also be specialized intensive work for those at the point guard position.”
On site registration begins August 3 from noon until 1 p.m. at a cost of $110 per camper, $90 for those who register before August 3. The price of the camp also includes lunch on Saturday and a commemorative t-shirt.
