Destrehan played their most complete game of the year, jumping all over East Ascension from the very beginning and pulling away with a 46-0 win that moved the team one step closer to their second straight undefeated regular season.
The game was actually over after the first quarter, with the Wildcats racking up 22 points thanks to scores from both the offense and the defense. Senior cornerback Antonio Parker got the scoring started with a 60-yard punt return, then defensive tackle Darrington Sentimore added two points of his own after recording a safety.
Wynrick Smothers and Henry Lenox would hook up on a 22-yard completion to stretch the advantage to 15-0, before Parker picked up his second score in 12 minutes after returning an interception 39 yards.
The Wildcats took it a little easier on East Ascension from that point on, picking up 24 points over the next two quarters to finish up the scoring.
“The team obviously played well in all phases of the game, both offensively and defensively,” Destrehan head coach Stephen Robicheaux said. “There were three touchdowns by the defense and the young guys got to play in the third quarter.
“This was our most complete game all season.”
Offensively, the Wildcats relied on their ground game, with Lenox leading all rushers with 109 yards on only five attempts. Lenox also scored two touchdowns. Myron Smith carried the ball five times, picking up 30 yards.
Smothers attempted only 10 passes, connecting on half of them for 83 yards and a touchdown.
On the other side of the ball, Otis Ben joined defensive mates Parker and Sentimore in the scoring, returning an interception 25-yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.
Now, only one team stands in the way of Destrehan’s quest for another perfect regular season – the Dutchtown Griffins.
“Dutchtown has three great running backs, including Eddie Lacey – who is ranked 12th in the nation – and Kelvin York and sophomore Effrem Reed,” Robicheaux said. “Those three weapons make them really dangerous.”
The Griffins are 7-1 so far this season with their only loss coming to Hahnville in double-overtime.
Last week, Dutchtown put a 56-21 whopping on St. Amant. Even in their loss to Hahnville, Lacey managed to rush for 228 yards with six total touchdowns.
But Dutchtown’s trio of backs hasn’t seen a defense like Destrehan’s before.
The Wildcats are only giving up 5 points a game and have shut out three of their last eight opponents. Robicheaux says his defense is looking forward to taking the field against the Griffins.
“There is no doubt that the players are excited about playing and winning a game against Dutchtown,” he said. “We want to have clean plays both offensively and defensively, but our defense will have to work hard to stop their running backs.”
And Robicheaux isn’t worried about his team buckling under the pressure of their current 23-game win streak.
“Our goal, like all high school football teams in the state, is to win the state championship,” Robicheaux said.
“Continuing to win gives us a better chance of winning the championship and we go into each game focused on playing a good, fair game and winning.
“The fact that we haven’t lost a game in a while doesn’t affect the way we play football.”
