Bullock named All-American

Bowling Green running back and DHS grad Chris Bullock was named a third-team Freshman All-American by The Sporting News. He set a new school freshman record with 769 yards rushing this year, leading the team. He also finished the season as the fifth leading freshman rusher in the country.
Eugene gets 17 off of the bench

Southern Miss guard and DHS grad Amber Eugene had 17 points and 6 rebounds off of the bench for the Lady Golden Eagles in their victory over Mississippi State on Sunday.

Landry named All-American, All-SEC

LSU safety and HHS grad Laron Landry was recently named an All-American selection by the American Football Coaches Association and a second team All-American by the Walter Camp Foundation. Landry was also recently named first team All-SEC by the coaches and the Associated Press.

Lumar succeeding for Bossier

Bossier Parish Community College guard and HHS grad Reginald Lumar scored a season-high 19 points earlier this season in the Cavaliers’ game against LSU-Shreveport. He has also scored 10 points twice this season and has achieved 4 or more assists three times.

Markey tops Bruins in rushing, receiving

UCLA running back and Luling native Chris Markey finished the regular season leading the Bruins in rushing and receptions. He carried the ball 208 times this year for 963 yards and 2 touchdowns while catching 33 passes for 267 yards. He also had 2 punt returns for 9 yards and 2 tackles.

Reynaud leads Mountaineers in receiving, kick returns

West Virginia wide receiver and HHS grad Darius Reynaud finished the season as the Mountaineers’ number one receiver, hauling in 39 passes for 520 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also led the team in kick returns with 737 yards and a touchdown on 28 returns. He also had 13 carries for 201 yards.

Stock shining for Lady Blazers

Belhaven guard and DHS grad Meagan Stock had 15 points, 8 assists, 4 steals and 4 rebounds in the Lady Blazers’ loss to East Texas Baptist on Saturday.

Turner named All-Gateway

Southern Illinois defensive back and HHS grad Craig Turner was recently named to the All-Gateway Conference first team after leading the Salukis in punt returns this season. He returned 23 punts for 343 yards and a touchdown this season. He also finished the season with 20 kick returns for 437 yards, 58 tackles, 8 pass deflections, an interception and a forced fumble.

Basketball Notes

Xavier guard and DHS grad Mark Stewart had 10 points, 3 steals and an assist in the Gold Rush’s loss to Wiley last Wednesday.

Football Notes

Several players ended the regular college football season last week. Here are some of their season stats: Louisiana-Lafayette defensive lineman and HHS grad Chris Lanaux finished with 4 tackles, a fumble recovery, a half sack and 1.5 tackles for a loss; Louisiana-Lafayette linebacker and Destrehan native Derek Morel finished with 2 tackles; Louisiana-Lafayette defensive lineman and former DHS student Korey Raymond finished the season with 35 tackles, 2 blocked kicks and a tackle for a loss; Georgia Tech defensive lineman and DHS grad Darryl Richard finished with 17 tackles, 2 pass deflections, 2.5 tackles for a loss and a quarterback hurry; Louisiana-Lafayette defensive back and DHS grad Jemarcus Smith finished with 2 tackles and Arkansas cornerback and DHS grad Darius Vinnett finished with 17 tackles, 4 pass deflections, an interception for 7 yards, a quarterback hurry and half a tackle for a loss.

This weekend also featured some solid performances from local players in college and at the professional level. Those included: Baltimore Ravens’ safety and HHS grad Dawan Landry had 3 tackles and a pass deflection and San Diego Chargers’ punter and DHS grad Mike Scifres had 3 punts for an average of 44.3 yards with 2 inside the 20-yard line.
