Nunez plates winning run as Hahnville bests Destrehan

After 10 innings last week, Hahnville and Destrehan were tied 1-1 and forced to suspend play in a District 7-5A showdown.

Thanks to Josh Nunez’s bases loaded walk after play resumed Wednesday, the teams are now tied up in a different way, one much more welcome to Hahnville.

Nunez’s walk netted him the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the 13th inning to propel host Hahnville to a 2-1 victory, pulling the Tigers into a first place tie in the loss column with Destrehan (22-6-1, 8-1)  for the lead of District 7-5A.

The loss snapped a 17-game unbeaten streak for Destrehan, dating back to March 9.

Waylon LeBlanc and Cade Miguez drew walks from DHS pitcher Brennan Cortez to lead off the bottom of the 13th inning, then Hunter LeBlanc singled to load the bases with no outs.

Destrehan wasn’t about to give in, and it appeared the Wildcats might shake free from that jam after Matt Champagne lined out and Cortez struck out Austin Perrin. But Nunez drew a walk on a full count and it resulted in the winning run.

Wildcats ace Landon Marceaux started last week’s game and struck out 17 over nine innings. He couldn’t re-enter the game after it restarted, as LHSAA rules dictate a pitcher is capped at nine innings in for any given game.

The Tigers (21-8, 7-1), meanwhile, had brought Perrin on in relief in the late stages of last week’s game, and when play resumed he was on the mound. He earned the win and did so in impressive fashion—over his three innings Wednesday, he struck out seven Destrehan batters and allowed just one hit. Over the course of the two games, Perrin went five innings and struck out 11, allowing no runs on two hits.

Cortez took the loss for Destrehan. He struck out seven, combining with Marceaux to strike out 24 batters over the full 13 inning game.

Bryce Rochelle went 3-for-5, including two doubles, at the plate to lead Destrehan over the full 13 innings. Waylon LeBlanc and Hunter LeBlanc each went 2-for-5 for Hahnville.
