However, his line drive 41-yard field goal attempt fell just short of the crossbar.
Landry-Walker players were celebrating on the field when one of their coaches yelled for them to stop, pointing to a flag that was thrown in the backfield. With a running into the kicker penalty Ford moved up five yards and poised himself for a 36-yard attempt. After a high snap, holder and starting quarterback Logan Martindale struggled getting the ball to the ground and Ford’s kick again fell short.
Bucaneers’ quarterback Li’Jon Cordier came out for the last play of regulation to kneel the ball and take the game to overtime.
After the toss Landry-Walker took over on Hahnville’s 10, but a false start penalty, one of many penalties that plagued the Bucaneers all game, took them back to the 15-yard line with goal to go.
The next play went Landry-Walker’s way with a 15-yard sweep for a touchdown to make the score 13-7. After a blocked extra point it was Hahnville’s turn to try and match the score.
One first down running back Lynn Simmons was knocked back for a three-yard loss and on the next play Martindale, in his first game at starting quarterback after Dylan Keller was injured last week, ended Hahnville’s second home game in a row with an interception and a loss.
Although the Tigers lost, Martindale did well for much of the game, picking up key first downs on the ground and making accurate throws including a nine-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tyler Lamers to take a 7-0 lead in the third quarter. With more of focus on the passing game, Martindale ended up taking quite a few sacks though.
Lynn Simmons also saw some success, running for a few first downs including a 42-yard gain in the first quarter and catching balls out of the back field.
Despite their ability to gain yards, for the second game in row Hahnville was not able to get into the red zone and the game was put into the hands of their defense and special teams.
In fact, it was special teamd play that gave Hahnville their only score on the night. After giving up a 33-yard pass out of the back of the end zone for first down on a fake punt on fourth down and 28 to extend Landry-Walker’s first possession, Hahnville was ready when the punter lofted the ball again in third quarter for another fake punt that ended in an incompletion.
Taking over the ball on the Bucaneers’ 10-yard line, Hahnville was in the end zone within two plays for the first score of the game and their first passing touchdown of the season.
Similarly, Ford was only in the position to potetnially win the game because of a fumbled snap on a Landry-Walker punt.
But it was Hahnville’s own troubles with special teams that gave Landry-Walker an edge. In addition to the missed field goals, Ford also had a punt blocked in the third quarter and in the fourth quarter shanked a punt for 16 yards giving Landry-Walker the ball in Hahnville territory.
On the next play Hahnville was called for a 15-yard facemask penalty before Landry-Walker made their way down to the one-yard line on a run. With a quarterback sneak Cordier reached into the end zone to tie up the game 7-7 with seven minutes left and Landry-Walker held on to win in overtime.
