Manning looking to escape shadow

Eli Manning is leading the New York Giants to Super Bowl XLVI against the New England Patriots in a rematch of Super Bowl XLII.

In that Super Bowl the Giants ended the Patriots quest for an undefeated season by upsetting New England, 17-14.

But as the storyline continues to roll on what will happen to Peyton Manning and his eventual release by the Indianapolis Colts over the next few weeks the story in this game is that it features the two best postseason quarterbacks in the business today.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has a 16-5 mark in postseason games and he is 3-1 in Super Bowls.

Eli Manning also has a very impressive win/loss mark in postseason games. Manning is 6-3 in the postseason, 1-0 in Super Bowl games and he is the first quarterback in NFL history to win five road playoff games.

Before the season started, Manning said that he belonged in the elite category of quarterbacks that included his brother, Drew Brees, Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers.

Many laughed the comment off, but not anymore.

Eli’s brother, Peyton, may get recognized as the most productive and best regular-season quarterback in NFL history, but when it comes to crunch time and winning games in the postseason it is Eli who has the advantage.

Peyton sports a 9-10 win/loss mark in the postseason and he was surrounded in those games by the likes of Edgerrin James, Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark.

This is no knock on Peyton, but it is reality that Peyton has played with a much more impressive supporting cast on offense. It has been Eli who has made the big plays and is now on the road to supplant him as the better postseason quarterback.

The game also features some of the best talent produced by the state of Louisiana on both squads.

Manning played prep football at Isidore Newman High School in New Orleans, halfback Brandon Jacobs played high school football at Assumption High School in Labadieville and cornerback Corey Webster played his high school football at St. James High School before having an excellent college career at LSU.

On the Patriots squad, halfback Kevin Faulk played prep football at Carencro High School and later at LSU, while fellow running back Ben Jarvus Green-Ellis played high school football at St. Augustine High School in New Orleans. Patriots rookie Stevan Ridley played college football at LSU.
