Lightning strikes, and so does Destrehan, 45-23 over Slidell

After a lightning delay pushed back the start of Destrehan’s 2016 season two hours, a loaded Wildcats team proved worth the wait for their fans — and may have just put the rest of Class 5A on notice.

The Wildcats put up nearly 600 total yards of offense in a 45-23 victory over visiting Slidell, led by dominating efforts by Kristian Mosley and Justin Jefferson who combined to score five times.

Unlike last season, when a 26-point Destrehan second half lead was nearly completely erased, the Wildcats had an answer each time Slidell threatened to close the gap.

Kohen Granier connected with Jefferson for a 34-yard touchdown to get the Wildcats on the board and ahead 6-0 in the early first quarter. A safety pushed that lead to 8-0 after a special teams mistake by Slidell. Bradley Quinn added a field goal to make it 11-0 in the first quarter.

Slidell answered via Wayne Griffin’s 19-yard touchdown pass to Parker Autrey and a subsequent two-point conversion play.

Kristian Mosley swung momentum back in Destrehan’s favor with a 41-yard touchdown run to make it 18-8 in the second quarter. Then Jefferson struck again, hauling in a 30-yard scoring pass from Granier to push DHS up 25-8 — Jefferson came up just shy of 150 first half receiving yards.

Though Destrehan maintained control, Slidell wouldn’t fade away easily. Griffin and Tre Reed combined for a long touchdown pass to bring the Tigers within 8, 25-17 in the third quarter. But Mosley answered immediately for Destrehan, his 84-yard run on the very next drive pushing Destrehan ahead 32-17. John Emery added an 18-yard touchdown run in the early fourth quarter to make it a 22-point game.

Mosley’s 44-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter put a cap on the winning effort, rounding out the 45-23 final.
