Ladycats turn around slow start, go 4-1 over last five games

A strong week of play by Destrehan has put its slow start to 2016 squarely in the rearview mirror. The Wildcats cemented their first district victory, besting Terrebonne, then went on to take three wins in four games at the Hahnville tournament over the weekend. The 4-1 week pushes Destrehan to 5-4 overall this season, a welcome place for Destrehan coach Kenny Montz and his team after a 1-3 start to the year.

“We started making less mistakes in the field and we swung the bats better,” Montz said. “We were already getting the pitching, but we started putting complete performances together for the full seven innings.”

The 12-2 win over Terrebonne (2-6) was a big momentum boon for DHS, which had scored just eight total runs in its four game start to the year. Taylor Lucich posted two hits in the game, including two doubles, while Krista Robles knocked in three runs. Gia Zeringue went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, while Carla Beck went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Robles pitched a complete game, allowing two runs (neither earned) on five hits. She struck out seven.

The Wildcats won the game in six innings by the 10-run rule. A five-run second inning opened things up for Destrehan.

“That was a big win for us, starting us off on the right foot in district play,” Montz said. “That got our confidence up headed into the weekend.”

Robles was the star against Chapelle (3-3) in the Wildcats’ Hahnville tournament opener, a 6-2 victory. She went 4 for 4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. She also earned the win on the mound, allowing one earned run on four hits.

Zeringue also hit a home run in the game, which saw DHS take a 3-1 lead in the third inning and never look back.

DHS garnered 10 hits on Chapelle pitcher Samantha Mracich, one of the state’s most respected pitchers. It was also Chapelle’s first loss of the season.

“She’s a very, very good pitcher. We played a very well-rounded game,” Montz said. “We stayed away from errors and showed our potential.”

Destrehan trailed 4-3 headed into the seventh inning against Belle Chasse (7-4) before scoring three runs to capture a 6-4 victory.

A Robles double scored Lucich to tie the game. Julie Scheuermann’s double to score Breanna Dominguez put Destrehan ahead 5-4, then Scheuermann scored on a Tabitha Tabb single to add an insurance run.

Robles finished with two doubles and a triple in the game. She struck out eight and allowed three earned runs on four hits to earn the win. Scheuermann reached base in all four of her plate appearances.

“We talked about playing hard through adversity for all seven innings. That can be enough to get your through sometimes,” Montz said. “That was a tough game for us and a big victory.”

Destrehan went on to best Ben Franklin with ease, 15-0 (Sarah Boquet’s grand slam helped open that game up), before falling for its only loss of the week, a 7-1 defeat at the hands of Beau Chene. Beau Chene pitcher Bayley Rodriguez held Destrehan to just two hits in her six innings of work.
