Ladycats end nearly decade-long drought

Time after time, Hahnville toppled Destrehan in softball, one of the few instances the multi-sport rivalry between the schools could be considered truly one-sided.So the Wildcats did something about it.

Breanna Dominguez’s walkoff RBI single plated Gia Zeringue and netted Destrehan a 5-4 victory over Hahnville, the Wildcats’ first win over the Tigers in the past nine seasons.

Hahnville defeated Destrehan 13-3 in the first meeting between the teams this season.

“I could see the way the girls practiced and the way they carried themselves at the park that they weren’t affected by the first game,” Montz said. “The last four or five games, we’ve really started to jel. It took awhile for us to get our full projected lineup out there, and now that we’re at full strength it’s pretty exciting to see what we’re capable of.”

Destrehan has won six consecutive games.

Hahnville seemed to take control in the third inning after posting four runs to earn a 4-2 lead. Danielle Duplay, Kamryn Keller and Maeson Martindale each drove in runs, Martindale plating the final run on a double.

Destrehan’s Kaela Schiro singled in the fourth inning to drive in a run and make it 4-3.

That was it for the scoring until the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Sarah Boquet socked a solo home run to centerfield to tie the game and force extra innings.

“She has five home runs this season and she came up in a clutch situation,” Montz said. “You could tell after she hit that home run that our girls weren’t going to be denied.”

Zeringue finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored for Destrehan (14-7). Lainnie Dugas and Taylor Lucich each collected two hits.

On the mound, Krista Robles allowed four earned runs on eight hits. She struck out three and walked none.

Montz said it was as well he’s seen Robles pitch in her three seasons as a starter.

“She had a mission in her mind,” Montz said. “She was going to will us to the win.”

For Hahnville (17-6), Martindale went 3-for-4 and Prince went 2-for-4. Taranto took the loss on the mound, allowing five earned runs on 12 hits.

Four freshmen stepped up to play a major role in the win: Dominguez, Zeringue, Boquet and Dugas.

Lucich, meanwhile, played a big role despite, Montz said, gutting it out through injury for most of the season.

“We kept pressure on them each inning,” Montz said. “I feel like we’re getting hot at the right time.”

DHS now has the opportunity to secure at least a share of the District 7-5A championship with wins in its final two district games.
