Lady Wildcats limited to one hit in playoff loss

The Destrehan Lady Wildcats season came to an end on Tuesday with a 3-0 loss to East Ascension in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.

Destrehan entered the playoffs as the No. 23 seed after finishing second in District 7-5A. However, the Lady Wildcats faced No. 10 East Ascension without star pitcher Krista Robles, who was injured in her team’s 4-0 loss to Hahnville that ended the regular season. Robles finished the year with a 20-7 record that included an 11-3 mark in district play.

Meanwhile Jessie Watts, the pitcher for East Ascension, was almost perfect from the mound in her team’s victory over the Lady Wildcats.

Watts, a sophomore, struck out 10 Destrehan batters and allowed just one hit in seven innings. She didn’t walk a single batter in the game.

East Ascension took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Carmisha Payton tripled to score Verlencia Jackson. East Ascension scored two more runs during the next inning.

Marina Speligene singled in one of those runs before giving her team a 3-0 lead when she crossed home plate on a triple by Claire Weinberger.

Destrehan’s Amanda McNaughton was the only Lady Wildcat to record a hit in the game.

Carla Beck pitched well for the Lady Wildcats in her first varsity start. Earlier this year, East Ascension beat Destrehan 12-2. This time, Beck held East Ascension to seven hits and three earned runs in six innings. She struck out four in the game.

East Ascension advances to face No. 7 Byrd in the regional round of the playoffs. The winner of that game will move on to the Class 5A state tournament in Sulphur.
