Lady Cats continue district domination, finish third at Riverside tournament

The Destrehan Lady Cats continue to cruise past district competition while knocking off some of the top teams in the area.

“I think we have made good progress,” Destrehan head coach Angi Butler said. “Our press is working well, we are feeding the post more and becoming more consistent.”

Destrehan (14-2, 4-0) started last week with a 108-40 district win over Terrebonne. The Lady Cats stormed out to a 22-10 lead after the first quarter and built up a 72-33 advantage by the end of the third.

Destrehan sophomore Cara Ursin led her team to the win with 37 points. Jerlicia Morris added 24 points while Brandi Mason finished with 10 points.

After their big win, the Lady Cats picked up a third-place finish at a tournament held at Riverside High School that drew some of the top teams in the state.

Destrehan won their first tourney game, beating Germantown 67-47. Ursin had 23 points in the victory, while Jasmine Morris and Jerlicia Morris had 16 and 15 points, respectively.

After advancing, the Lady Cats avenged an early season loss to Cabrini with a 54-33 win. Once again Ursin led the charge, racking up 26 points. Jasmine Morris finished with 12.

Butler said her team was able to beat Cabrini because they stayed out of foul trouble this time around. The first time the two teams faced off, the Lady Cats were called for more than 20 fouls, while Cabrini had just five.

“We came out knowing we had the ability to win, we just had to execute well and stay out of foul trouble,” Butler said. The next morning, the Lady Cats suffered just their second loss of the season against eventual tourney champ Salmen.Destrehan got off to a slow start, but they were able to tie Salmen at the half. However, Salmen pulled away late to secure a 52-46 win.

Butler said the game was tough for her squad because they played a late game the night before and had to face Salmen at 9 a.m. the next morning.

“We were exhausted and we got off to a slow start. We also had some injuries,” Butler said. “With all that being said, we played pretty well. We just couldn’t put the ball in the hole late.

“Salmen is a pretty good team and Kalani Brown is a big ole girl.”

Ursin had 21 points for the Lady Cats while Brown led Salmen to the victory with 24 points.

After the loss, Destrehan faced off against Mt. Carmel with a third-place finish on the line. Destrehan dominated Mt. Carmel throughout the contest, with four Lady Cats scoring in double digits in the 69-50 win.

Ursin led Destrehan with 19 points while Mason finished with 17. Jerlicia Morris added 13 points and Jasmine Morris had 11 points in the victory.

Tuesday night Destrehan returned to district play and picked up a 37-30 win over Thibodaux. Ursin scored 16 in the win while Jerlicia Morris finished with seven points.

Destrehan is now gearing up for the meat of their district schedule. While the Lady Cats have dominated in three of their four district wins, Butler believes her squad will be able to handle the pressure that comes with winning and winning big.

“As a coach, you are always worried about focus, but I think we will come out OK,” Butler said. “Even if we are struggling, we seem to always regroup at halftime and play our game. We will be alright, but we have to stay consistent.”
