Jesuit tops Hahnville, 28-13

The Hahnville defense had no answer for Jesuit tailback Paul Stanton, who rushed for 214 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Blue Jays past the Tigers, 28-13.

Both squads got off to sluggish starts in the contest with numerous dropped passes due to the slippery conditions. Jesuit did put together a nice drive towards the end of the first after a 22-yard run by Stanton brought them to Hahnville’s 10-yard line. The Tigers would hold Jesuit to a field goal attempt, which ended up being blocked to keep the score tied at 0-0.

The Blue Jays finally took the lead with 8:56 left in the second quarter when Austin Duncan broke through the Hahnville defense for a 10-yard score. Hahnville’s best chance at points in the quarter came after an interception by Tyren Hills. But with only 23 seconds left in the half and the Tigers more than 40 yards from the end zone, quarterback Easton Melancon had to toss two passes deep into the end zone.

Both were batted down.

While points were hard to come by in the first half, Jesuit scored 14 points in a little more than a minute to pull away from Hahnville.

Stanton gave his team a 14-0 lead on a 61-yard run with 8:14 left to go in the third quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Tiger tailback Ernest Thompson was hit hard by two defenders and fumbled the ball away.

Stanton then carried down the left sideline for a 16-yard score to give Jesuit a 21-0 lead.

Hahnville would put two nice scoring drives together shortly after. Melancon found receiver Ronny Green at the goal line for a 10-yard touchdown.  Two minutes later, Melancon connected with Jaylon Bryant on a 37-yard score that brought the Tigers to within a touchdown.

However, Bryant was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct after pointing to the sky after his touchdown run. Hahnville’s extra point attempt was blocked and Jesuit still led 21-13.

After Hahnville’s scoring drive, Jesuit continued to pound the ball with Stanton. The senior scored his final touchdown on a 7-yard run to put the game away.
