Jefferson scores 3 TDs in Desterhan rout

Destrehan receiver Rickey Jefferson scored three touchdowns to lead the Wildcats to a 45-22 win over St. James Friday night.

Destrehan jumped all over the visiting Wildcats, taking an early 7-0 lead just three minutes into the game when quarterback Dillan Dent found Jefferson for a 43-yard touchdown pass on 3rd and 11.

Daniel Cimino connected on a 28-yard field goal to give Destrehan a 10-0 lead with 3:44 left in the first quarter and then Jefferson worked his magic again, dancing across the field on a 69-yard touchdown run.

Trailing 17-0, St. James finally got on the board when Dent again tried to find Jefferson near the end zone. Instead, the ball was picked off and returned 80 yards to cut the Destrehan advantage to 17-6.

But the score wouldn’t stay that way for long.

With five minutes left until the half, Jefferson scored his third touchdown on a 66-yard catch and run where he again gutted the St. James defense.

Destrehan’s defense, which played well all night, gave the offense an assist on their next score. With St. James lined up to punt, Gary Johnson and Malcolm Darensbourg broke through the line and forced an 8-yard punt. Wildcat tailback Mark Trudeaux would put the ball into the end zone shortly after to give his team a 31-6 halftime lead.

In the third, Destrehan struck again on the first offensive play of the game when Dent found a wide open Michael Smith for a 50-yard score.

The Wildcats would score their final points of the night on a 1-yard run by Kevin Smith in the third quarter. The touchdown was set up by a blocked punt by Noland Sharpe.
