Boys Baseball

This just in: The Tigers played in the East Ascension Jamboree Feb. 22-24. Among their games the Tigers took on Slidell and came out victorious with an impressive score of 7-2, thus going on to win the tournament against Baton Rouge Catholic.
Tigers also played in a gripping game against the South Terrebone varsity baseball team in a 15-14 victory.

Hot hands: Colby Broussard, junior, led the hitting rally in the 1st inning by bunting down the 3rd base line to get on base.

Spark plug: Taylor Domingeaux, senior, hit a stand up double and would later score the first run for the Tigers after Loupe sacrificed his bat.

Show stopping play: Slidell didn’t know what hit ’em when pitcher, Taylor Domingeaux, and first basemen, Adam Risinger, made an outstanding pick-off play in the 1st inning.

What needs work: Players agree that smart base running and clutch hitting are minor weaknesses that need to improve before district play begins to dominate the district.

Up next: Tigers faced off against West Monroe High School.

Girls Basketball

This just in: Congratulations to the Lady Tiger basketball team for a great season. They played Ponchatoula Green Wave in the quarter finals to end their district play at home on Feb. 22, but unfortunately fell to the Wave’s solid defense.

Hot hands: Everyone played their hearts out in the final game of the 2007 season, either by racking up the score board or hustling to get back on defense. Each girl brought their own unique ability to the court, but unfortunately that night it just wasn’t enough.

Finishing up on a good note: Though the girls were not ready to end their run in the play-offs, they finished the season with a 26-6 record and many accomplishments to be proud of.”

All the girls should be proud of their performance and hold their heads up,” says senior Naomi Hills.

Girls Softball

This just in: The Lady Tigers played Berwick Feb. 27 at home, and came out triumphant in a 4-1 victory.

Hot hands: Chelsey Flores, senior, undoubtedly swept the game on the mound, as well as at bat on the offensive side. However, she had a strong defense to back her up when things got tight.

Spark plug: Kristen Laque, junior, snagged any and all pop flies, grounders, or fouls that came her way in right field during the game.

Improvements: Executing the opportunity to bat so players are not left on base would benefit our game, says sophomore Delia Barker.

Up next: The girls teamed up against Destrehan High School.

Golf

This just in: On March 1 the golf team matched up against Mandeville at Willowdale Country Club.

Hot hands: After being off for eight months because of back surgery, senior, Derek Bonvillian made a powerful statement on the course against the Mandeville golf team.

Spark plug: Dayton Bordelon, senior, also gave an excellent performance with his short game, but feels he still needs work on his drive.

What needs work: All the players need to give a tremendous effort to be able to qualify for the state competition.

“There are five legitimate places for our HHS golfers to fill, and compete in state coming up soon, so we all need to stay focused on our main goal,” says Bordelon.

Boys Tennis

This just in: On Feb. 27, the Tigers suited up against the E.D. White tennis team at the Monsanto courts, but had a heartbreaker when the boys just couldn’t get their swing right to defeat the players of E.D. White.

Hot hands: First seed for singles and doubles, Travis Fillman, played with finesse and quickness to try and come back against his opponent.

Spark plug: Aaron Davis, 2nd seed doubles with Fillman, played hard at the match and executed the fore hand, back hand, and side-winding hand in his match.

Need to remember: “Going in too confident or too relaxed could really affect our game.

“I hope to work on my serves, and keep up the energy during the entire match,” says Landon Soroparu.

Up next: The team faced off against the C.C. Morgan City tennis team.

Girls Tennis

This just in: Hahnville was bustling Feb. 27 as the Lady Tiger Tennis team dominated E.D. White in their home match for district.

Hot hands: Kristen Brannon, senior, gave an excellent performance on the court and led to team to its sound victory.

Spark plug: Also junior, Kelsie Soudilier, put up some major points to the Lady Tiger’s advantage. Her serves are vital to her impeccable game.

What needs work: For the girls, Coach Bordelon feels that her players may not have played to the level and potential that they can, but gave a tremendous effort on the court to finish out the match and bring home the win. “We always need to play at our level, not to the other teams,” says Coach.

Up next: Girls traveled to C.C. Morgan City to play tennis.

Track

This just in: On Feb. 15, Hahnville’s first ever indoor track team competed at LSU’s track for state qualifications. Few of the contestants in the field events placed very high and acquired some outstanding rankings. With the championship ending the indoor track season, the outdoor track team had a mock meet at HHS on Feb. 24.

Outstanding athlete: Rickia Preston, freshman placed 8th overall in shot-put, Janai Steib placed 8th overall in triple jump, Constance Mitchell placed 10th overall in high jump, and Ta’Neisha Steib placed 1st and is the state champion in the indoor long jump with a jump of 18 feet 3 inches. These ranks are from the indoor championship and are the first girls ever to place on the HHS indoor track team.

What needs work: “This is definitely our biggest girls track team, and we are very competitive among each other, but still depend and rely on each others specific talents in a meet,” says shot put athlete Heidi Burnum.

Coaches thoughts: “As far as outdoor track, we expect to have a very strong team this year. We have won district two consecutive years and return most of our team from last year including two state champions in long jump, TaNeisha Steib and 400-meter dash, Daniel Douglas. We have over 45 athletes including a strong freshmen class. Our expectations are very high,” said Coach Ken Oertling.

Up next: HHS track will have a meet tomorrow at the HHS Stadium and in one week participate in the Don Raymond Relays.
