HHS Sports Week with Megan Waters

Baseball

Season update: On Tuesday, April 3, the Tigers played against Vanderbilt High. In the 6th inning the Tigers 10-run ruled the team and the Tigers went 10 for 12 up at bat. Tigers were unstoppable during the game.

Hot hands: Colby Broussard, junior, pitched a solid game and hit the game winning grand slam to put the Tigers at 10-0.

Sparkplug: Lyndon Eusea, junior, went 2 for 2 up at bat and reportedly took one for the team in order to put the team on base.

What went well: The boys really had a successful day and it seemed as though everything went their way. “We were defensive beasts out there,” says sophomore Blaise Dempster, pinch runner for the Tigers.

Up next: With district games coming to an end, the boys’ last district game is April 21 against Destrehan.

Softball

Season update: With district in full swing the Lady Tigers played John Ehert on Tuesday, April 3 on Tiger fields. Unfortunately for the Patriots, they became “tiger meat” by the 5th inning with a score of 14-0.

Hot hands: Kelli Walls, senior, hit a triple while at bat and gave the team some serious runs. Also Megan Hamilton drove in two runs and hitting a double.

Sparkplug: Mindy Gaubert, sophomore, played great defense and snagged any and all throws to first during the game.

What went well: “Base running was really good this game,” says senior Chelsey Flores. And there was plenty of base running during that game with 14 runs to get in.

Wrapping up the district: One more game left and the girls have secured district champs for the season of 2007.

Up next for the Lady Tigers are play-off games that have not been decided yet.

Girls Tennis

Season update: On April 4 the ladies traveled to Thibodaux to take on their Tigers in a battle for the title of alpha-tiger. Unfortunately it ended badly for the HHS Lady Tigers in a loss, but many individual matches turned out successful.

Hot hands: Megan Gonzales, freshmen, has shown great potential on the court with her quick, agile footwork and hard serves. Recently Megan won her challenge match, which determines how players are ranked among each other on the team.

Sparkplug: Jada Louis gives the team a great attitude and motivation while she is in-between her long rallying games. Louis plays hard at all times, which keeps her in her matches because she refuses to give up easily.

What needs work: The Lady Tigers’ tennis team has been dedicated and determined all season, but some areas of weakness are still being able to get to the ball and staying in the match. All of the girls have their own strengths and their own fallbacks yet they work together as a team to push each other to play their best.

Up next: Congratulations to the Lady Tigers for winning District champs. Play-off games will be scheduled on later dates.

Boys Tennis

Season update: Traveling with the girls, the Tigers also played Thibodaux Tigers on April 4.

Hot hands: First seed, Travis Fillman, has really stepped up his game and plays hard every time he is on the court.

Sparkplug: Andrew Miller, senior, also has shown improvement this season and has been a key factor in the Tigers successful season.

What needs work: Staying focused for every game will benefit play for some players. Raul Jain feels that he “lost his stroke.” It will come back to you, you just have to find your groove again.

Up next: For those qualifying for play-off’s, schedules will be released at a later date.

Golf

Season update: The golf team, has a pretty busy schedule coming up. Traveling to Lake Charles and then to Ruston all in a week’s time, our golfers will be on their toes.

Hot hands: Paul Hymel, potential fourth man player, has shown great progression on the golf course.

Sparkplug: Alli Petit, younger sibling of golf star Dustin Petit, is top golfer on the girls’ team and veteran on the course.

What needs work: With many matches coming up, the players need to be concentrating on staying on top of their game. Being patient on the green will make or brake golfers’ scores.

Up next: The Hahnville golf team will travel to Ruston on Monday, April 14 for annual golf tournament.
