HHS sophomore named top prospect

Pitcher has already drawn interest from top college programs

Hahnville sophomore Austin Perrin is turning heads of Division 1 baseball coaches here in Louisiana and across the South.

The 15-year-old Boutte resident, who participated in the 2014 National Underclass Showcase Event in Fort Meyers, Fla. last Dec. 28-30, was named to the Top Prospect Team and the Top Velocity Team for outfielders.  Also, on Jan. 17 and 18, Perrin was named a stand out in the Marucci Elite Select Program and Tulane Showcase Event.

He was graded eight, out of a perfect 10, in the overall competition.

However, the pitching mound is where scouts and coaches seem to feel Perrin is most valuable. The left -hander was clocked with an 84 mile an hour fastball by Prep Insider Report.  It was said Perrin had great control, with the ability to work his pitch well to both sides of the plate.

According to Perfect Game USA, Perrin has a nice consistent running life on his heater.  His curve ball was judged to have a hard spin with very good arm speed, release and command.

Perrin’s father, Tim, said it’s been a nice experience to watch his son’s success so far.

“For me it’s very emotional as a dad to watch him develop,” he said.  “To have coaches tell me Austin has the ‘it’ factor, the stuff that cannot be taught, the maturity along with the ability is very moving. As a coach, I coached him for a little while as a child, but I never taught him how to throw a baseball, that’s been all him.”

Perrin’s father also said he’s had college coaches tell him they’ve been aware  of his son for years, which could explain the scouting interest  from schools like LSU, Ole Miss and Tulane University. Other schools who’ve expressed an interest are Texas A&M, South Alabama, Grambling, Nicholls State, ECU, Coastal Carolina, Corpus Christi, Southern University and several others.

While many high school athletes are privileged to excel in only one sport, Perrin has proved he can throw the football with a better than average ability as well. As a varsity backup freshman quarterback, who took the reins of his Hahnville team after the starting QB was forced out by injury in the third game of the season, Perrin threw for 1,300 yards and 18 touchdowns. He rushed for 340 yards, and along with his teammates, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 5A playoffs.

Perrin is a good student, with a 3.2 grade point average, according to his father.
