It may have just been a coincidence that the clock read 1:11 when wide receiver Ricky Preston, who wears jersey no. 1, reeled in a leaping grab for a 19-yard touchdown on fourth down and 17 on Hahnville’s last possession of regulation.
With a successful extra point by placekicker Craig Ford, Hahnville had come from 10 points down to tie the game, and after Thibodaux ran the clock out, take it to overtime.
Thibodaux quarterback/tailback Donta Johnson, who had a huge first half with 90 yards rushing and a 53-yard pass that set up a score, came in the first series of overtime after being out much of the second half nursing a leg injury. Hahnville’s defense held as Johnson handed it off once and ran three times, including twice from the one-yard line.
Then Ford came in and kicked a field goal for the 27-24 win to send Hahnville off to a 1-0 district record and 2-2 overall.
The victory comes after back to back losses for Hahnville in clutch situations, including a loss in overtime last week against Landry-Walker and in the last minute the week prior to that against Rummel. This week it was Hahnville’s turn.
Thibodaux took charge of the game on the opening possession with Johnson picking up a 31-yard run on the first play from scrimmage and leading the rushing attack in an 80-yard scoring drive.
Hahnville did not answer back until their fourth possession of the game that began off a Thibodaux fumble that was recovered by linebacker Timothy Roberts in Thibodaux territory. After the turnover tailback Todge Scott ran three times in a row picking up first downs on back to back carries before taking the ball in from six yards out to tie the game up with a Ford extra point.
In what became a shootout Thibodaux roared back off 53-yard pass from Johnson to wide receiver Jason Richard who ran a sweep on the next play for 15-yard touchdown.
On the next series Hahnville tailback Lynn Simons took a handoff up the middle and cut to the outside to peel off a 40-yard gain that was followed by a 22-yard gain by Scott before Simmons was given the ball again and took in the score from seven yards out.
However, Thibodaux was quick to answer back with Richard picking up another key reception from quarterback Peyton Bonvillian before rushing in a touchdown from one yard out to make the score, after the extra point, 14-21 at halftime.
In the second half Thibodaux added to their lead with a 25-yard field goal to make it 14-24, which they took well into the fourth quarter.
Hahnville began to make their comeback with 5:30 left in the game after the Thibodaux punter shanked a kick for eight yards and quarterback Logan Martindale found wide receiver Brandon Singleton on the next play, which set up a 37-yard Craig Ford field goal to bring the score to 17-24 and Hahnville within one score of tying the game.
Hahnville’s defense came up big on Thibodaux’s next series when defensive end Dwaine Thomas sacked sacked Bonvillian for an 11-yard on second down and 21. After losing five more yards to make it fourth down and 44 Thibodaux’s punter shanked another kick for 19 yards.
Martindale took over for the tying drive going three of four passing for 39 yards and a touchdown that took the game into overtime and led to Hahnville’s come from behind victory.
Hahnville next takes on Destrehan at home on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
