HHS boys fall 79-50 to open district play

But Lady Tigers win big

The Hahnville boys and girls basketball teams went in different directions in the district opener for both squads against Bonnabel, with the Lady Tigers winning by nearly 30 points and the Tigers falling by almost 30.

The boys hung with Bonnabel in the first half of their 79-50 loss, and only trailed 32-26 heading into the third quarter. That’s when Bonnabel put the Tigers away, outscoring Hahnville 30-11 in the period.

Jaylon Bryant was the only Tiger scorer in double figures, finishing with 15 points.

Center Montel James led the Bruins with 27 points, while Matt Lebeaux and Sam Stirgus each finished with 12 points.

The loss comes after a four-game win streak by Hahnville with their two most recent wins coming in a 68-57 victory over St. Charles Catholic and a 50-38 victory over West Jefferson.

“We are a very young team entering a brutal district for boys basketball,” Hahnville head coach Brian Lumar said. “We will have to play our best basketball over the next few weeks in an effort to be successful.

“I just want the guys to play hard, play smart and play together.”

Meanwhile, the Hahnville girls crushed Bonnabel 60-33 behind 14 points from Rea Fields.

Mariana Gilbert and KaeLynn Boyd each scored 10 points in the win while Rickell Preston added eight points.
