HHS basketball camp gets underway June 23

Hahnville High School’s basketball camp will get underway on June 23, with a separate session to begin on July 14. Both sessions will take place at the Edward A. Dufresne Community Center in Luling.

While at the camp, boys and girls between the ages of 6-16 will receive hands-on instruction from former Hahnville High School basketball coach Brian Lumar. Lumar excelled at Loyola University and is still the school’s all-time leading scorer. He coached Archbishop Shaw to a pair of state championships and was named Louisiana’s coach of the year in 2009 as the head coach for Hahnville.

Lumar finished with an overall coaching record of 165-40.He said the best thing about Hahnville’s basketball camp is that kids are grouped by age and talent level so that they can receive correction in all phases of the game.

“We start with the basics and work on fundamentals,” Lumar said. “Our motto is play hard, play smart and play together. If you do those three things, you can be successful.”

The camp welcomes all talent levels, from those that excel at the sport to those who have never played basketball.Along with receiving instruction, Lumar said the camp goers have a lot of fun.

“The kids always have a great time,” he said. “They get to interact and meet other kids while learning.”

All campers will receive a T-shirt and there will also be giveaways throughout the event.

The first session gets underway on June 23 and goes through June 26. The camp last from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. each day. The second session is from July 14-17.

The cost of the camp is $100 per camper, per session if they are pre-registered.
