Hahnville High School wide receiver/defensive back Ronnie Green hoped to make his mark at the HTV-10/Lions Club Bayou-River Showdown as a playmaker, but he never would dream that he would end up being the MVP for the River Region All-Stars playing quarterback.
Green led the River Region All-Stars to a 16-14 come from behind victory and he put his team in a position late for Destrehan High School placekicker Daniel Cimino to nail a 42-yard field goal to win the game in dramatic fashion.
Green took over for East St. John quarterback Darion Monroe, a Texas A&M commitment, at halftime after the talented signal-caller suffered an ankle injury.
Green ended up completing 13 of his 19 throws for 146 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed for 42 yards on 8 carries and he caught 2 passes for 19 yards as a receiver before Monroe’s injury.
St. James High School head coach James Bell, who coached the River Region team, said that Green was masterful in handling the quarterback spot despite not being slated to play quarterback that night.
“What can I say about Ronnie? He was a playmaker for us as a receiver and a runner, but he really threw the ball well tonight and on target,” Bell said. “The ball was a little slick due to the weather conditions, but I was impressed with his accuracy and his ability to make something happen when everything else around him breaks down.
“He was well deserving of that MVP honor.”
Dramatic action came in the closing moments after Green hit St. Charles Catholic High School running back Marcus Hall with a 4-yard touchdown pass. But the River Region squad came inches short of converting on a two-point conversion play and still trailed 14-13.
Destrehan’s Cimino then hit a perfect onsides kick that was recovered by St. Charles Catholic’s Jeffrey Hall.
After Green connected on two pass attempts (and was helped by a delay of game call by the Bayou Region) Cimino calmly nailed the 42-yarder as time expired.
Central Lafourche High School standout linebacker Jordan Caillouet, a nephew of former LSU Tiger quarterback Tom Hodson and a Nicholls State baseball signee, was the MVP for the Bayou squad. He recorded 10 tackles with 5 assisted tackles, 3 tackles for losses and one pass break-up.
St. Charles Catholic star running back Marcus Hall also scored on a 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Central Lafourche High School head coach Travis Douglas, who was the head coach for the Bayou All-Stars, came away very impressed with the talent on the River Region squad.
“We played hard tonight and had some chances to put them away, but they just didn’t go down easy,” he said. “Just look at the athletes they have in guys like Ronnie Green, Marcus Hall, Jairus Moll from West St. John and Kevin Smith from Destrehan was a real impressive player as a runner and a receiver. We had a real tough time blocking Derek Robinson, the defensive lineman from Destrehan High School and Blake Scott from Lutcher.
“You hear all about what people say about the talent in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and in north Louisiana, but the talent along the river is as good as you will see in these parts.”
Hahnville DB no longer Minnesota commitment?
Reports are that Hahnville High School defensive back Tyren Hills is no longer a verbal commitment to the University of Minnesota. Hills, a 6-1, 180-pound defensive back who is a projected safety at the college level, is trying to upgrade his academic standing at the present time and is now taking a serious look at North Texas University.
