With Hahnville trailing Haughton 14-13 late in the fourth quarter, linebacker Peyton Robert scooped up a fumble and rumbled into the end zone to give the Tigers their first lead of the game.
That late score would be all Hahnville needed clinch an appearance in the quartefinals against rival Destrehan.
Hahnville came into the game against Haughton as underdogs, but the Tigers showed they weren’t fazed by a more than five-hour drive on Friday. Though Haughton took an early 7-0 lead, the Tigers battled back to tie the game at 7-7 in the first half.
Still, Hahnville head coach Nick Saltaformaggio felt his team had scoring opportunities in the first two quarters that they failed to capitalize on.
“We just weren’t finishing drives,” he said.
Late in the fourth quarter, Hahnville made up for those missed opportunities. With less than two minutes in the game and the Tigers trailing 14-13, Robert picked up a fumble and returned it for a score to give his team a 21-14 lead.
Hahnville’s defense did their part on the next series by forcing Haughton to turn over the ball on downs. A few plays later, Hahnville running back Devonte Cravin slashed through defenders, scored a touchdown and put the finishing touches on a 28-14 Tiger win.
Hahnville’s win set the stage for an epic showdown next Friday when the Tigers travel to take on Destrehan.
When asked what he thought of a rematch with Destrehan, Saltaformaggio was direct.
“Whoever wins that game is going to the Superdome,” he said.
