Hahnville rebounds to knock off Helen Cox, 51-47

The Hahnville boys basketball team rebounded from a tough loss to West Jefferson to knock off Helen Cox 51-47 Monday night.

The Tigers trailed 24-15 at the half, but came out firing in the third quarter to outscore the Cougars 17-8. Hahnville took a 35-32 lead on a 3-pointer by Dejon Peters in the fourth and never looked back on their way to the win.

“It was a good win for us. Cox has some nice wins on their schedule,” Hahnville head coach Joe Schick said. “They played Newman within five points and beat Country Day so I thought we played well. We still have a long way to go.”

Hahnville had an opportunity to take an early lead in the first quarter but missed several shots, which opened the door for Cox to hold on to a halftime lead.

“We just weren’t making shots in the first half and if we would have hit those shots we would have won by more,” Schick said. “Defensively, we did a good job all game.”

At halftime, Schick told his squad that there is a reason there are two halves in basketball and that if his team’s shots start to fall, they could escape with a win.

“We felt that we had some good shots in the first half and could still get some good shots in the second half if we executed,” Schick said.

Dejon Peters led the charge for the Tigers, scoring 16 of his 18 points in the final two quarters.

“The big thing with him is that he is a guy that can score and we need him to score for us,” Schick said of Peters. “He has to let it come through the offense and I think he did that. He was moving without the ball and that made a big difference.”

The Tigers are currently 7-4 on the season and will play in back-to-back tournaments at Country Day and Holy Cross before returning home for a rematch with West Jefferson on Jan. 3.

During those tourneys, Schick said he would like to see his team improve their shot selection.

“We have to get better in shot selection and being able to move the ball a little bit,” he said. “Sometimes we just settle for things too quick. That’s something we are working on.”
