Hahnville improves to 15-5, Destrehan picks up district win

Hahnville’s Candies leads team to four straight wins

Lauren Candies continues to be a driving force behind the success of the Lady Tigers softball team, picking up four wins over the weekend to stretch her season record to 13-4.

“Candies pitched well and gave us a chance,” Hahnville head coach Kenneth Vial said.

However, Candies wasn’t alone, Hahnville also got plenty of offense from Jia Bridges, Destinee Nicholas, Megan Hamilton, Bailey Flores and Kristen Laque.

In the four game win streak, which included victories over Central Lafourche, Morgan City, Dominican and Chapelle, Flores hit .539, Nicholas had an average of .461, Bridges was .416 and Laque hit .440. Hamilton also came up big, batting .357 during the four game stretch.

Though the Lady Tigers were able to pick up four straight wins, they actually suffered a pair of losses to rival Destrehan and East Ascension.

The Lady Tigers couldn’t come through down the stretch as they fell 3-4 to Destrehan, then got little offensive production in a 1-5 loss to East Ascension.

“We hit a stretch where we didn’t have good at bats with runners on,” Vial said.

However, they more than made up for it over the weekend. The team picked up a 6-2 win over Chapelle on Friday, then blanked Central Lafourche, Dominican and Morgan City by scores of 7-0, 4-0 and 10-0, respectively.

“This weekend we were better,” Vial said. “We had a few big hits by some people who were struggling and we just hope to build on the positives of this weekend.”

The win streak moves the team’s record to 15-5. Vial says that defense and pitching have been solid for his club so far, but he hopes the squad improves from the batter’s box.

“We had a stretch where we had bad at bat after bad at bat,” Vial said. “When we learn the strike zone and defend the plate, we will be a much more effective offensive team.

“Our improvement must come from within each hitter. It’s a team thing.”

The Destrehan Lady Wildcats are also hoping for improvement over the remainder of the season.

The team started slow, with a tie to Terrebonne and three straight losses to Covington, Higgins and Dominican, but has bounced back to a 3-10-1 season record and a 1-1 district mark.

The team has wins over Grace King, H.L. Bourgeois and Hahnville.

The scores of those contests were 15-3, 4-3 and 4-3, respectively.
