Hahnville fumbles way to victory in triple overtime

The most pivotal moment of the game took place when Hahnville cornerback Drew Favre came on a blitz and flattened Landry-Walker Keytaon Thompson for a five-yard loss.

For the second week in a row the Hahnville Tigers allowed their opponent to come back from a double digit deficit and take the game to triple overtime, but this time it was the Tigers that came out on top.

Hahnville (2-1) looked like they might be on their way to a loss in triple overtime for the second week straight when sophomore quarterback Austin Perrin, who was forced into action at the end of the game when junior quarterback Mike Neal was injured, was running toward the goal line and a Landry-Walker (2-1) player knocked the football out of his hands and into the end zone.

Landry-Walker players, thinking they had recovered the ball, began a premature celebration while referees picked through a scrum of bodies. After a short conference one the officials raised his arms in the air signaling a touchdown for Hahnville and a 45-39 lead.

Landry-Walker was called for an unsportmanslike conduct penalty for the celebration and began their last drive of the night at the 25-yard line. Although the Buccaneers were able to make it inside the five-yard line, they could not convert for a touchdown and went away with the loss.

Only moments earlier the Tigers and the Buccaneers each had a chance to put the game away after the teams ended the previous overtime periods with touchdowns to tie the game up. However, neither team was able to successfully convert point after attempts forcing the game into the final period of the night.

From the very beginning the game was full of excitement. Hahnville did not have success on their first drive of the night and had to punt. When the football rolled to Landry-Walker’s one-yard line it looked to be a good sign. But, on the first offensive play from scrimmage, Landry-Walker quarterback Li’Jon Cordier connected on a 99-yard touchdown pass to put the Buccaneers up 7-0.

Hahnville came back fast and got great field position off of a 67-yard kick return by junior A-back Devonte’ Cravin. Junior B-back Drew Dunn followed up with a 13-yard rushing touchdown, but Hahnville missed their first of three failed extra point attempts on the night to bring the score to 7-6.

Landry-Walker fumbled on the ensuing kick return and Hahnville recovered. Cravin quickly ran in a 19-yard touchdown, which was followed on the Tigers next drive, after the defense stopped Landry-Walker, by a 72-yard rushing touchdown by A-back Rickey Preston to bring the score to 20-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Landry-Walker began to mount a comeback back as Cordier led the Buccaneers down the field, capping the drive with 20-yard passing touchdown.

Hahnville answered with a Neal quarterback keeper for a touchdown that was set up moments earlier by a 14-yard gain by Cravin on fourth down and four that allowed Hahnville to take a 27-13 lead into halftime.

When Landry-Walker came back out onto the field for the third quarter they did so with Cordier on the bench and sophomore quarterback Keytaon Thompson firmly in control. Out of a shotgun option Thompson ran a succession of quarterback keepers and capped the first scoring drive of the half with a 29-yard rushing touchdown to narrow the score to 27-21.

Hahnville took over at the end of the third quarter and held onto the ball for seven minutes driving it deep into Landry-Walker territory. That drive ended when Neal came up two inches short on a quarterback keeper on fourth down and one and injured his shoulder.

Thompson came roaring back and tore through the Tigers defense leading the Bucaneers down the field again with a couple of long runs before handing off to junior wide receiver Javon Conner for a 10-yard rushing touchdown. After Landry-Walker was unsuccessful on a two-point conversion the score remained tied at 27-27.

With six minutes left in regulation Perrin took over Hahnville’s offense and went three and out. After a facemask penalty by Hahnville on the subsequent punt Landry-Walker took over with good field position and Thompson started driving down the field again.

The Bucaneers made their way deep into Hahnville territory before an offsides and a stuffed run gave them third and long. That is when the most pivotal moment of the game took place. Hahnville cornerback Drew Favre came on a blitz and sacked Thompson for a five yard loss. With fourth and long and 37 left on the clock the Tigers blocked a Bucaneers field goal before running the clock out on offense to take the game into overtime and later onto their second win of the season.
